Hi there, guys––

I have a question for you about sending magazines from other countries into the US.

My brother currently lives in Vietnam, teaching English.  He's found a town in Cambodia (just over the border) that sells AK rifles, but more importantly, lots and lots of AK parts.  My question is this.....Is it legal for him to send back a big box of mags?  Apparently there's all sorts of stuff there.  Bakelites, Aluminum waffles, chinese drums, the whole shibang.  I know there are probably the duty concerns, but there shouldn't be any legality concerns (cambodia seems to be okay with him mailing them) on our side of the border, right?  Thoughts?

Thanks a bunch.

They would probably never get through customs.

i would just do it and not tell anyone.

You would probably have to file an importer form with the ATF for orders of more than $100.

Considering there's some ignorance in the issue and some advice that might set your brother up for failure, you probably want to re-think the idea.

In addition to the "under $100" regulation, most countries frown extremely on shipping weapons parts out of their countries.  Particularly if the weapons parts are those easily recognizable by its authorities.  Despite whatever issues you want to "dodge" by doing a gray import into the US, you have to consider what kind of regulations Vietnam has on such items and what the penatlites are for an offense.  Doing it and having those items discovered in a package by Vietnamese Customs is probably not the time to learn they have the authority to detain and hold your brother for questioning on the charge of knowingly and willfully trafficking weapons/weapons parts internationally.  And with most countries getting onboard with the GWOT, that could be the least serious charge.

We sometimes get really comfortable behind our white picket fences where the most accessible things to us, such as going to the local gunshop and getting ammo, is a serious issue elsewhere in the world.  I know a little as I've ordered related stuff from Asia and Europe, and have done the paperwork to import a few things from both areas of the world a few times.  Just be sure you know the legalities - it can range from simply not receiving the items due to Vietnamese or US Customs confiscating it enroute to having to deal with some unpleasantness from an investigation.

Your bro needs to watch "locked up abroad" on A&E and see if a 75 cent North Korean mag is worth getting caned by the gaurds and a**raped  by bubba wang everyday until he gets out. Don't sound fun to me.
