I have a pre-ban norinco 223 ak... looking for spare mags and it seems some work and some don't... do the new polymer promags function well or should I be looking for surplus stuff.

I would say as a general rule the military type are better than the after market type,at least in my experience.

223 mags vary in their exit feed angle, and not even Chicom are the same for both varients. If you do not get clarification here, try the chicom section later.

Best bet is to buy some Chinese .223 mags off the equipment exchange.  They cost about the same as the Bulgarian waffle mags which may or may not work in your rifle if it is a Norinco.  I've got some of them to work in the past, about 30% success.  The promags are inexpensive so you could buy one and try it.
