Anyone work up loads for a Drag or a PSL?
I have a new to me PSL, and have found the following.
Any Hungarian light ball=sucks.
Russian E code light ball=good, with a occasional flier.
Russian 7N1=slightly better than the E, but without fliers.
Czech silver tip=inbound, will try this weekend.
I have dies, but am asking what loads worked for you.
Brass, powder, primers, velocity.
Thanks,
Milton

Not reloaded myself, but two nice resources are www.reloadersnest.com/frontpage.asp?CaliberID=216
and www.7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo.htm

It has been a while, but I have loaded up some Graf brass with Varget, and a 174gr Sierra MK. I fooled around with that load for a while, but the 147 gr Wolf was shooting just as good so I dropped it.

The very first three rounds I ever shot through my PSL were Wolf, and they went into a 1" group. That is good enough.

With the availability of the Prvi Partizan/Wolf Gold/Grafs and sons 7.62x54r brass (all made by Prvi), and the Sellier and Bellot brass, we can now obtain brass to reload something other than the Berdan, or other rare Starline and expensive Norma or Lapua brass:

www.grafs.com/metallic/product/4649

This brass takes regular large rifle boxer primers.

I have been reading and searching forums, and alot of people are simply reloading .308 bullets into these cartridges with good shooting but varying results of accuracy. They arent doing this out of ignorance, but for the lack of a boat tailed FMJ pointed bullet in the .310-.311 inch range.

All of the .310-311 bullets I have found with a point and a boat tail are not in the 140-150 grain range. Usually they are in the 170-180 grain range. The ones in the 140-150 grain range are flat base and not boat tail.

This may be fine for you Mosin owners, who can shoot any weight you want, but it is not ideal for my Romak.  They say dont shoot anything above the 150 grain range for fear of wear and tear on the mechanisms. I don't know for sure, but likely this is the case with the SVT-40 and SVT-38 owners as well. As far as the flat bottom goes, even most 7.62x54r military ammo isn't flat base, the Wolf "regular" is, and likely most of the other Wolf produced (non Prvi) ammo as well. I don't want to reload flat base.

So my search for a bullet has hit dead ends for months, I have been looking at 303 brit and 7.7mm jap and the .310-.311 bullet listings of all kinds of catalogs. I even dismantled a couple rounds of 7.65 Argentine (.313 yikes! and way too heavy) in my search.

Then I noticed a few places selling some Prvi bullets, but only in popular diameters. So I check back with grafs and find this:

www.grafs.com/browse/930/product/18300

it is website item 18300 and Prvi/grafs par # PPB311SP150 and it is boat tailed although the picture sucks.

Kim there at Grafs tells me they sell a PPB311FMJ150 or "Full metal jacket" version, but both are out of stock. It is missing from the site but she says they are going to remedy that and contact me when its up. A quick check with her boss and he tells her they are holding back on ordering until the dollar improves against the Euro. We know that is not likely any time in this decade. Eventually they will come to that conclusion as well and order. He and she said they will contact me when the item is listed on the site so I can make a backorder. If enough people order they will just place thier order now.

I will update my post when they contact me with the FMJ link.

Thanks for the info.
The Czech ST shoots pretty good.
The AK trigger in the PSL makes shooting off the bench a bit draining, though. Just installed a G-tech trigger, and will see how that works out.
Tried a buffer, but the recoil feels "short", plus the bolt catch only engages sometimes.
I pulled 100 of the Hungarian rounds. OAL, bullet weight, and powder charge varies quite a bit. I neck sized the cases, and will use my Redding powder measure to recharge the cases with a more consistant charge of powder. I have a bunch of 155gr .308" Nosler Custom Competition bullets inbound. I'll post as to how this combo works.
