Is there a general overview of the types, brands, advantages, and disadvantages of the various brands and makes of 7.62 x 39 out there? I need a quick familiarization before I inadvertently spend money on gun-destroying crap ammo.

What gun?

Most rifles chambered for 7.62x39 are designed to shoot crap ammo so there isn't a problem. Just stick with non-corrosive primers and you should be good to go.

I'll be using a Yugo SKS. Are Wolf and Barnaul brands corrosive, or noncorrosive?
