Recently I picked up a brand spankin' new SGL31 in 5.45x39.  Though this is my first AK to own, I am not new to AKs at all.   However, I am somewhat new to the ammo available for them now that I actually have a reason to buy several boxes when I see some in stock.

I bought 12 boxes of Golden Tiger and shot them all.  All of the rounds went boom and were on target and all of us shooting that day had a blast.   What my concern is though is the lacquer coating.  Before paying out at the store where I bought the ammo I was told that constanly shooting lacquer coated cases WILL cause the lacquer to build up in the chamber.  Since I've never purchased or shot any lacquer coated, steel cased ammo until now I've never paid too much attention to talks about it being a myth or real problem.

Whether it's a myth or not I really liked the ammo and I plan on shooting a lot of it.

I'm sure there are many users out there that have probably shot thousands of rounds of this stuff and other brand with lacquer coated cases that I hope can maybe give me some insight.

Is the lacquer really going to build up over time?  If it is how would I go about cleaning it?

No.

Not necessary.

Lacquer is not really an issue, and it won't affect a tapered-case AK anway.

If you want to read up on the problems with steel and ARs, go to the AR-15 Ammunition forum and read the stickies, but it's not, and never has been, and never will be an issue with sharply tapered cases like the 5.45x39 in an AK variant.

Thanks.  I had assumed it wouldn't be a problem in an AK.

I have occasionaly glanced over topics and read some good things and many more nasty things about steel cased ammo in ARs.

A lot of which are probably just arfcom rumors.  Lacquer doesn't build up in the chamber, you can pull the bullet, primer, and powder from the casing, then take a torch to it and the lacquer wont come off.  Its not heat from firing causing lacquer to come off the cases, its that steel doesn't expand as easily as brass, so more carbon is able to build up in the chamber.  Mostly a problem for ARs, not so much for the AK.

This video from Aim Surplus is worth watching:

Lacquered steel cases are all that the Russian army uses in 5.45x39mm. They don't seem to have a problem with it and after many thousands of rounds of it personally, I have had no issues either. The lacquer thing is a myth.
