| Much to my chagrin, I've discovered rust in several of my rifles. Before you come down on me for being lazy and negleckting my responsibility to keep my weapons clean, my only excuse is that although I was shooting non-corrosive ammo and then letting them sit. I think humidity was probably the culprit, even though the SKS was in a safe with a large dessicant bag. Another reason to be careful shooting "non-corrosive" Russian ammo. The rust is not full-bore, but seems to be established where the groove meets the land. A thin line of rust strarting at the mouth of the bore and followig the rifling. While persusing this particular cleaning section, I read a couple of recent posts, and found some good ideas. I've decided to use Kroil and repeatedly soak and swab the bore. Furthermore, the chamber of the SKS was rusty and I used an idea from this site to clean it I used a.410 brush with 0000 steel wool and CLP in an electric drill So far it looks good without any visible pitting. The other guns are a few C&R rifles which I feel confident will clean up. I hope that maybe this posting helps someone Remember, "rust never sleeps". P.S. I found the Kroil at Midway and was absolutely raped on shipping, but I felt that I had no other options. |

Wow that sucks hopefully they clean up ok. My first centerfire rifle was a mak90 and I didn't know anything about corrosive or non corrosive ammo and I also didn't have internet or even know any gun websites. I would buy ammo locally mostly wolf mil classic when it was still laquor coated. I stumbled across some yugo corrosive, old Chinese corrosive and some maybe Russian unmarked paper boxes that I think are also corrosive. I fired them and cleaned with hoppes #9 and lubed with clp. I live in oregon about 20 mins from the pacific so it's salty too.
The barrel became slightly brown and their was some rust on the muzzle and bolt rails, end of the piston, and the gas tube. I flushed the rifle down with hot water and re leaned and lubed I managed to get the rust off and nothing was pitted and it had no lasting effects on the rifle. My cousin who lives the town over from me had the no name paper boxes that was corrosive and fired it through his SKS and it rusted up pretty quick and he ended up giving me the remaining 600 rounds of the ammo |
| I've had great experience so far using the Birchwood Casey Sheath/Barricade on all my rifles. Once every 6 months I get them out and respray and wipe down the outside. All rifles are cleaned ASAP after use though and get sprayed down with the BC before going back into the safe. |
