I recall reading a post on cleaning the carbon buildup on the piston and bolt using scrubbing bubbles cleaner. Has anyone tried it?
Does it do any damage?

Since products like Scrubbing Bubbles will remove all lubrication from parts, why not just cut to the chase and use a real carbon removal product like Slip 2000 Carbon killer.

Slip 2000 Carbon Killer is a green colored, safe liquid that just dissolves carbon from metal.  You have to really shake the jar to mix it, then it's easiest to just drop the part in the jar and let soak for 15 minutes or so.
Once you take it out, you might give it a fast scrub with a stiff M16 toothbrush and then rinse in hot water.

The hot water will remove the Slip 2000 and heat the part up so it'll flash dry.  Then all you have to do is apply a coat of lube to prevent rust and lubricate it.

Often, the best option is to use something that's specifically designed for the job at hand instead of fooling around with something designed for something else.
Slip 2000 Carbon Killer is designed to safely remove carbon from guns.  Scrubbing Bubbles is designed to clean a bath tub.
