Gentlemen,

A newbie (both to this forum and to the AK platform) here with a question.  I am trying to solve a problem with a malfunctioning Century built WASR-10/63.  When cold, this rifle shoots nicely and much to my surprise fairly accurately.  The problem is as a range session continues by the time you get to the middle of the second or third magazine the rifle starts jamming on virtually every round.

Typically, it'll jam with the bolt to the rear with the spent case and an unfired one both visible together in the open action.  Guessing it might be a magazine problem I tried a number of different magazines (the TAPCOs it came with, Romanians, Bulgarians, and what may be a Russian one) to see if I could find one that would consistently work.  It had the same jamming problem no matter which brand of magazine I tried.  The magazine fit in this particular rifle was pretty sloppy, both side to side and front to back.  So I put in a longer than normal magazine release lever and fitted it to give a tight fit.  That helped with the looseness of the magazines to some extent, but the jamming problems have continued.

I was reading an article (on a different type of rifle) and it mentioned that if headspace was insufficient the rifle would initially function okay, but as the rifle heated up and things expanded the rifle would start jamming just as this WASR does.  This is the second Century rifle I've had dealings with and both have had problems, so out of spec headspace wouldn't surprise me.

I know that the proper thing to do here is to buy some headspace gauges to check the rifle.  So the question I have are:

   1) I see that there are SAAMI and CIP gauges.  Which ones would be appropriate?  The rifle
will be shooting steel cased Russian import ammo.

   2) If I find a headspace problem, can the barrel be reamed while still in the receiver or
would it need to be pulled first?

   3) Are there any other problem areas I should be looking at to cure this problem?  Selling
it comes to mind, but the owner likes it and I hate passing problems on to other people.

I appreciate any time and help you gents might be able to provide.  Thanks,

Matt

How old is the rifle?  You may be able to get the headspace fixed under warranty.  If not, how much are your fingers and eyes worth?  I personally value mine more than a headspace gauge,  If the headspace is actually okay, one common problem seems to be rough chambers that will function while cool, but not when hot, so you may need to ––-carefully–– polish the chamber.  There are a lot of threads about that, and they explain it a lot better than I can.   Welcome to the board, and for the most part, I have found most fiolks on here to be darn helpful and not flaming pricks like on some boards.

The rifle would be out of warranty I would think.  I'll check the headspace to see how it is.  Thanks for the heads up on the chamber polishing.
