How often, if ever, do you clean your steel mags? I cleaned them up when I got them to get the cosmoline off. I am tempted to clean them each and every time I empty one but I tend to be excessive about cleaning. I just took a look at a couple I used today and they look pretty clean actually...
Realistically what is a good cleaning schedule? Thanks |

Sked is entirely dependant on how dirty they get. Range mags will go a long time withoug being cleaned, but field mags mebbe much less so.
Your spring should always have a very light film of lube on it, and likewise the internal mag body should have a very light film of lube. CLP is very good, cheap, and available. The outside of the blued mags can be waxed with automotve finish products, which will provide some moisture protection, and not be impossibly slippery, as would oil, or the like. Assuming clean, properly lubed mags that are not dragged through the mud, mebbe every six months. Field mags subjected to all kinds of crud, mebbe weekly. This is an occasion to remind folks that some of the issued field gear in the current military ops may not prove out to be optimal. For example, there are many types of pouches /shingles that have more-or-less open tops. This open top arrangement might be fine under some circumstances, but those circumstances might not be YOUR cicumstances. Not for nothin; but as a milsurp collector, I've seen some butt-assed stupid items issued. I'm guessing open-topped mag pouches in a dusty environment might be one of them. FWIW, I've always favored mag pouches that enclosed the tops of the mags in a flap that entirely protected the mag from most everything. Time will tell, but I'm sticking with protectiing my assets, especially since I don't have the ability to turn in defective/neglected items for free. Just sayin'. |

Good info! Thanks! What do you think of this idea - for the mags. I usually have some 2 stroke gas left from the weekend, I do some motocross riding, what if the mags were submerged into that gas/oil mixture then left to dry. Seems like the gas would do the cleaning and the oil would do the lubing. ![]() |

Not saying your proposal wouldn't work as a last-ditch field expedient, but barring that, use the right stuff if you can get it. |
