I just got my first romanian AK this weekend, and I've started restoring it by staining the furniture...now how do I restore the metal back to like-new state? there has to be something out there...

I refinished my WASR with Brownell's Aluma-Hyde II.

It takes a little bit of work, but nothing too drastic.

Completely disassemble the gun.
Degrease thoroughly.  Simple Green and HOT water in a bath tub is a good first step.  Follow-up with acetone and brake cleaner.
Apply AH2 as per Brownell's video.
Wait 2-3 weeks before reassembling.

Brake cleaner won't hurt AH2, nor will Hoppe's #9, CLP, acetone, or Gun Scrubber.

Thanks for the advice...but putting my rifle in water is never an option for me lol, being in the army I just can't trust it.

Good thing you weren't in the Navy.

Thanks for your service.

You might want to try Blue Wonder Gun Blue or G96 Gunblue.

Or the Marines. Saltwater is an absolute bitch. Sand and salt is a nightmare. Everyday life for a grunt in a boat company.

I would not fear very hot water. The retained heat will speed evaporation

If you have an air compressor you could dry it off quickly.
