Is it necessary to oil the stock, and if you do is there anything special to look for when buying stock oil?

I don't really want to change to look of the wood, just protect it.

I would recommend rubbing a bit of boiled linseed oil on it.

If it is a laminate stock, a polyurethane finish will be better. BLO is better for straight open grain wood.

It's not laminate.  Just wood.

Would this stuff be good? Tru-oil

Tru-oil will certainly work.

You need to make sure you wood has an oil and not a polyuretahne finish like a WASR.  There really isn't much to do to those.

Oil finishes look nice but are more maintainence intensive.

I don't think I have ever put oil on a Kalashnikov stock.  Some poly-tech ore oiled but most are shellacqued or polyurethaned.

Garand and M1A?  Oil it!

Well I have a GP WASR-10.  Does that mean it has a polyurethane finish?

A permenant finish that seals the pores of the wood.  I suggest you google on the "types of wood finishes".
