I recently installed a Krebs custom rear peep sight on my AK.  The sight is one piece of steel and basically looks like a stanard sight but with a peep instead of a notch in the rear.  It is more rugged than other rear peep sights I have seen.  It is of good workmanship, with no complaints (it works).  However, I found the peep to be a bit on the small side.  It just about covered the wings of the front sight.  I personaly like to be able to see the wings of the front sight so that my sight picture looks like nested rings with the post in the middle.  I drilled the opening a hair to fit my needs.  Also, with the peep being low, and the fact that the rear sight ramps upward, I found that the ramp obscures the front sight post.  This is not an issue with the standard notch rear sight as the "wall" of the notch blocks the "ramp".  Also, the groove down the center is more narrow than a standard sight, so also obscured the front sight post.  I ground out the groove and opened the end up and now everything suits me fine.  I now have a clear and open sight picture with the ring of the front sight wings nested in the rear peep and a clear unobstructed view of the front sight post.  I finished it all off with a coating of KG gunkote flat black.  Bottom line: The sight is not perfect, and paying $45 for something I had to tweak out is not that good of a deal.  But I enjoyed doing it as "if it ain't broke, I can still fix it."

Rear peep sight before:

Rear peep sight after.  Note the scalloping of the front end as well as the widened groove down the middle.

Sight picture.  You can still see a bit of the "ramp" but the front post and wings are not obscured.  Originally, only the top bit of the post was visible.

Nice job! How do you get such clean detail with the colors?

I did all that work on the sights and you ask me how I colored it?  LOL

I typicaly just use nail polish, painted on and then wiped clean with some acetone.  Considering that a woman's hands is subject to some crazy lotions, oils, etc... it holds up quite well.  In this particular case, I never wanted to take that damned rear sight off again, so I KG koted it the same way.  Just paited it on and then wiped it off with some MEK.  It comes out all nice and crisp by it self.

Exactly what size did you drill that out to in order to get the front sight shroud to seat in the peep?

+1 on the finish job.  How do you sight it?  do you just center the top of the front sight in the rear ring?  Just seems like there may be a lot of slop in the "windage", although I've never shot peep sights before people say they are much more accurate...

I don't really care for peep sights but your 3rd pic looks like a nice set up, I could enjoy using one like that.

Great job on the details too.  Thanks for posting this.

Well, sighting in was rather disapointing...

Unfortunately with the way AKs work, with only the front sight post that can be adjusted, I have a great sight picture of nested rings, but the front sight post in not in the center or them.  It is just off to the right and a tad high.

The fact that the rear sight can not be adjusted was something that I never thought of.  sigh...

My $39 Mojo rear peep sights have windage adjustment capability built-in.  Thank God too 'cuz one on my Romy builds ran out of front sight windage adjustment with over an inch to go at just 20m.

To each his own but I prefer a tighter peep sight and also have a Krebs peep on my Sar 1. One of these days I'll get around to buying 3 more for my builds.
