Just drop the rod in the barrel (use some teflon tape to cover threads inside the barrel). Use sutable piece of steel barstock with hole drilled in it to fit in the receiver, it needs to rest on the trunion. Use penny with hole drilled and steel barstock on the muzzle end. Lube barrel jurnal, assemble the whole thing with nuts on both ends, center everything up and start tighten the nut from the muzzle side. Go slow, check allignment, check the barstock inside receiver (it should always rest on trunion, and not on any part of the receiver). Whatch the barrel pin hole, stop thightening upon allignment of the pin cut with the pin hole (if the barrel new, you will need to periodically stop the process and check the headspace, then put the rod back together and give it another small turn untill it is set). All done, take the rod out and pin the barrel.
Very easy and smooth process.

When using this method, I have had a problem with the barrel not moving after going in half way. I ended up stripping the threads off of the allthread rod. My solution was to use a rubbet mallet, and hit the front site base to give it a little push once the tension on the all-thread rod was tightened up. It worked very well, and did not damage the site base.

I had the same problem as Fishpaw.  I even tried using stainless steel allthread, it would just make this horrible sound when I tried to tighten it.  Barrel went in to the point of the pin cutout in the barrel being even with the front of the trunion.  I tried smaking it with a mallet as well, did not work for me.  I bought a 20 ton press and have never looked back.  The press just makes it so easy, especially when setting headspace on a mismatched kit.  HTH

After doing the first barrel with the allthread and mallet, I too bought a press. Its amazingly easy and fast to reinstall barrels now.
