I saw a tutorial that said the barrel would not need to be removed if you drilled out the old rivets then heated the end of the new rivet red hot before driving it in against the barrel.

Anybody try this method?

Never tried it, but it sounds like a load of poppycock.  By the time the rivet reaches the barrel, it won't be red hot anymore.

The bigger problem with this method is loss of clamping force.  IF you did get it hot enough to stay yellow hot (soft enough to smash quickly) it will shrink significantly as it hardens.. as it shrinks, it will yield or permanently bend.

It will not leave any residual tension or clamping load, and the rivet will loosen.  Cold riveting works becuase it leaves a good amount of residual tension.

Huge red hot rivets in steel construction work because they do not deal with the impact and vibration stresses seen in an ak.  You may be ok doing this, becuase there is little stress on the front two rivets.  Just make sure to rivet the swell neck rivet in back using the standard method.  You dont need to remove the bbl for that one anyway!
