I am having a hard time getting the upper hand guard off the gas tube on my rommy G kit.

Is there some trick?  I thought they just twisted off,  I tried a monkey wrench ,on the side that mounts into the rear sight, but I still cant get a good enough grip on the hand guard.  I dont want to put a bunch of scratches or dents in the wood.  Any suggestions?

I can't really help you cause I only did one Rommy and broke the wood, seems like it breaks pretty easy.  So I'll watch this thread with with you.

This is essentially how I did it, except I cupped the wood in my left hand as I turned the vice grip with my right.  vice grip may leave a few scratches, recommend a crescent wrench.

after rotating 180 degrees the tube should just "fall" out.  don't force anything.

This website also shows the direction of rotation, may be helpful.

+1

Put the squarish end in a vice a twist with your hands. You can use a strap wrench on it just be really careful it's easy to break that wood.

That's strap wrench, Tommy2339, not strap on.

I usually have difficulty getting my wood in.  I think it's somewhat oversized, and usually requires a twist to get it going in properly.
