Since Bushmaster was able to manufacture their "Arm Pistol" 15-20 years ago, and there weren't that many major changes to the NFA and GCA68 rules since then, would it be legal to build a bullpup AK pistol with no buttstock and one pistol grip mounted in front of the mag well? I'm thinking an AMD rear trunion welded up would work for the rear, modified metal lower handguard with trigger guard and pistol grip for the front, I built a Groza knock off a couple years ago, so wouldn't be very demanding, just wondering about the legal status of it. As I read the law, it would be, but with those Washington types, never know what they'll come up with next. Has anyone done one or have any info on it? Thanks much.

Ummm...I don't see any problem with it.  But of course, I am a retard. (True!) There is actually already a kit out there that will turn the AK into a bullpup design for like $225

They were considered rifles and the veritcal grip OK, don't label it as a pistol and it should be good to go.

The Bushmaster Arm pistol?

It had about a 8" barrel, was definitely not a rifle.

I don't know about an AK bullpup pistol, the ATF tends to make new "reinterpretations" of existing law all the time.

It may resemble a modern bullpup rifle a little too much, there would be very little practical difference if you put that thing up to your shoulder.....

I would tread carefully.

well you cant have a forward pistol grip on a pistol or its an aow
i dont know if they will care that there is no rear pistol grip

think it could be called either way

i know i wouldnt want to be the one holding it when that question was asked

IIRC, that weapon ejected from the top of the receiver, not the side.  The grip could swivel so you could cant it to lay against the inside of you left or right arm,  and the brass would eject up and away from you.  The side ejection on the AK would require a "left arm only" set up, tossing empties right in front of you face (hopefully in front of!).  If not then you end up .

If there is only 1 pistol grip, what does it matter where it is?

I'm a newb, don't quote me on this, but I think, BATF clearly stated, that the grip infront of the magazine, must not be a pistol grip. It did not mention anything about number of grips.

I would write them, and ask them with a detailed description first, if I were you.

Well, from everything I have been able to read on the ATF site and other firearm retlated sites, my opinion is   SCREW IT! They do make their own rules, interpret them as the like, so I'll just build a standard pistol. I might just do another rifle build as bullpup. Thanks for all the input.

I have actually seen the "forward grip on a pistol" referred to as an AOW and as not an AOW in seperate letters from the ATF.  So obviously they don't even know their own rules.  I tread lightly on the ATF's rules when I build.

It's much better to let that particular sleeping (BATFE) dog lie.

I'd do a bullpup rifle (barrel 16" plus; overall length 26" +), but this pistol idea is too risky for me.

Winning a court battle could still cost you your retirement fund.
