My problem I keep having is the bolt sometimes doesn't pick up the round correctly from the left side of the mag. The issue isn't so much as the mag height as its the bolt/carrier sometimes (or had the possbility) of riding high up on the rail and the bolt can turn a small amount and his the ejector. Yes, the bottom of the receiver is a perfect 90 degree bend and isn't bowed. I can help the issue by thinning the spacer between the mag release and the reciever, but can create another problem. The mag can have a slight tilt, meaning the round points a little down. Then the bolt (if the carrier rises off the rail) can still ride high and twist a little hitting the mag and or ejector. The jig I used is the AK-builder and has to be bending them correct because the trunion holes are lining up perfect. I believe this was solved at the factory with the top rails being stepped down, but I can't produce the step down. Any other flat builder have the same issue? What did you do? |
I thought the top rail step down was there to help hold the bolt in place closer to the lower rail. Which, after I consider what your are saying, realize that's what you're saying.![]() I had a similar problem with a krink build. Mine picked up the cartridge fine, but slammed into the ejector going into battery. I fixed it by putting a small bit of angle on the edge, only the edge, of the top rail. It added additional influence on the R bolt lug causing it to rotate a small bit more. Just enough to clear the ejector through the slot. Like you, I would like to be able to step the top rail. |
And because the carrier can rise, the bolt turns a little and hits the outer most of the mag lip at the rear. |

I guess one starting question that needs to be asked is, are both lugs riding the lower rails all the way home? However, it would have to be out pretty bad not to pick up a round. My best internet guess is that your mag is too low in the rear, for whatever reason. Or maybe your rails are too high. Or, I guess your receiver geometry could be playing hell. If your bolt is smacking the ejector --above-- the slot. your bolt is rotating off the lower R rail likely because of hammer spring tension and you need to close the distance between the upper and lower rails on the right side, but you also need to keep the lower lined with the front trunnion. So about all you can do is to simulate the top rail step down as best as you can. A pic or two would help more than anything. Diagnosing problems over the interweb is a bitch to say the least. |
