who has a wood buttstock for a maddi misr- mine is loose fitting/poorly mated to the rifle

I took one that was poor fitting and loose. I recut it so that it fit better and ended up using Brownells accugel and bed the stock to the trunnion. Nice fit.

I think it is left over varnish...or better yet I think that they varnish the stock in the receiver. LOL

Wax or use release compound on the rear trunion, use Acraglas or a good epoxy putty on the badly fitting inlet on the stock, and install. But be sure not to use the putty where it'd lock in the stock. Let cure and it'll be rock sold but still removable.
