Okay, I got everything assembled on my first build except the furniture.  I oopen the bag to get the FCG parts out and there are a million little parts including some springs that for the life of me I have no idea what to do with.  I've got everything together, the saftey selector the trigger and hammer, but I have all these little metal parts left over and I'm afraid I left something important out.  Any ideas?

thanks,
Tom

You may have left over Full Auto FCG parts...If you got a Tapco G3 that other than the hammer spring and the pins are all you should need.

and the disconnector spring.

Yup, forgot that one...

Good catch

What's the disconnector spring?

Looks like the spring from a ball point pin.

Oh god... maybe you should get an experienced builder to look over your work before you shoot the rifle.

That's why I'm asking.  I followed instructions, I dry fired it, and it works.  How about an answer?

it holds back the hammer while you pull the trigger and the bolt comes back.

yes, you need it. it sort of goes inside the hole cut in the bottom of the disconnector

how are you building a new AK in CA?

when you say disconnector spring, are you talking about the sear spring?  I have the sear in there with the trigger all held down by the hammer spring, but I'm not including the hammer Pin retaining spring.  Is that necessary in the original parts group?

I'm guessing I'm calling the disconnector the sear, and that may be where I'm confused. Is this what you're talking about?  fcg section ?

I'm fixing the mag, so that it's Cali Compliant.

Look at the picture, the spring goes into the hole in the bottom of the disconnector at nearly the same angle that is it shown in the picture. The springs other end rests on the plate between the two legs of the hammer. The trigger pin goes from the hole in the receiver into the leg of the trigger into the diconnector back through the other leg of the trigger and out the other side of the receiver.

Okay, thanks, I guess the confusing thing for me is that there was a disconnector/Sear like this one, and also one that looks like the one in this link .

Are they two different types of disconnectors?  One has moving parts, the other doesn't.

thanks,
Tom

So how do you load this thing, remove the bolt carrier?
Is this thing even going to be 922r compliant?

it's easy to build a cali compliant ak...just use a non banned receiver, and weld the 10 round mag, OR remove all assault features (pistol grip, threaded barrle, bayonet lug, etc) and you can keep the detachable mag feature.

Saiga 308 trigger groups and buttstock are a great solution.

And don't forget 5 usa parts if you keep the pistol grip (fixed mag)

or 4 usa parts if you keep the detachable mag feature (no pistol grip).

edit: I'm thinking usa parts aren't needed with a fixed mag...no WAY it would fall under the assault weapon category in sec 922. with a detachable mag though, I think you would need the usa parts.

Well I took both my new builds to the range, and I apparently did the triggers correctly as they fired flawlessly.  My only problem is the bolt return on the Yugo is sticking, which didn't happen until I attached the receiver permanently.  I'm thinking it's the rails, but the problem seems to get worse when I put the safety selector in, which makes me think I am pulling the receiver too tightly around the bolt.  Anyone else have this problem with a Vulcan reciever?

The Romanian which I picked up as a kit for 80 bucks at the Del Mar gun show is like a dream.  Not a hint of a problem.  I'm really excited about these builds, but they took me forever, and I broke about 40 drill bits.  I'm pretty sure my hands will never be the same, as they got all jacked up working with the metal and all the filings.

a common problem is the rails being to close together, take some pliers and slip them down in between the rails, and pull them apart (to wided the distance between the left and right rails) basicaly you want the bolt carrier to be "loose" and have some slope as it rides inbetween the rails. This will solve your problem...

and welcome to the acke breaky hands club.

you need the bolt carrier to be sloppy as a drunk vagabond as it rides the rails.
