I've never done a build from a kit before, and I'm a little bit confused about something.  Typically, a kit would be coming from a weapon that would have been fully automatic.  We can receive the kit, because there's no receiver, therefore no firearm.  However, if the kit contains all the trigger control parts for a fully automatic weapon, am I potentially in possession of a machine gun if I own other AK's?  I was under the impression that if you owned an AK or AR, and you also owned the parts to turn that rifle into a machine gun, that you could be charged with possession of a MG.

I'm obviously missing something.  I checked the FAQ threads, but I don't see anything addressing this (other than the compliance parts).

The receiver is the gun.  So long as you do not drill the 3rd pivot hole in the receiver you are fine.  Some people throw away their full auto FCG parts just to be safe and some don't.  Your call.

So in an AK, there is a difference between an auto and full auto receiver?

I was thinking of this from an AR-15 perspective.  If I were able to buy an M-16 "parts kit", I don't think I'd need to do anything different to an AR-15 lower to make it fully auto.

Does this basically mean you can only buy/sell parts kits for weapons in which the auto and semi-auto receivers differ?

any ''ar15'' receiver would need altered to accept an ''m16'' auto sear, if they didn't you wouldn't be able to own it w/out paying the tax & rediculasly inflatied going price, same w/ ak's

Yes.  A full auto receiver has a hole for a third pivot pin that holds the auto sear.  Semi auto receivers only have two holes for pivot pins.  In the picture below, the yellow arrow shows the 3rd hold.  Do not drill this hole in a semi-auto receiver or very bad things could happen.

Now....just for the sake of entertainment.....what sort of "very bad" things are you referring to???  It just sounded too interesting to not ask....

on the ak the third hole for the auto sear pin & the slot in the rail for the auto sear are verbotten

no 3rd hole, and no slot in the rail and you're safe

either one of these gets you the vacation at camp stick-n-butt
