I am trying to install the upper handguard onto the gas tube of a SAR-1. When I get the wood handguard on straight the metal retainer that goes between the gas tube and the guard is off center and is visable from the side. How do you keep the metal retainer  from going off center?

Seems like you should be able to move it back and forth until both are centered.  i.e. rotate the HG "too far" and then back a little to move the retainer.  Or is the retainer not catching on the little slots in the HG?
