Smashed a long rivet over the weekend for my center bushing and it came out ok, but the head was a little small and flat. No problem here since it was under the selector. Also tried to install the long rivet for the rear underfolder trunion but the head came out WAY too small to even round it off. What's the trick? Were my rivets too short? I used a rivet kit from akparts.com. I can't see how I could have possibly gotten a full round rivet head look on the hammered side with those rivets. Also do you guys use a hammer or vise to get a rounded rivet head on both sides? At this point I'm thining about installing U-drives in that hole instead of a long rivet. |
| I've had that problem (rivet heads coming out too small) when my holes weren't lined up perfectly. If there's wiggle room for the rivet to fill inside the hole it will do that before forming a head. I have started using longer rivets just to help. I'm mashing mine with a hammer and a punch with an indentation--it works very well. |

Actually the "punch" I'm using is a weird little piece of steel rod I found in my gradfather's workshop but yeah, just drilled a dimple in the end and kind of ground back the metal around the dimple so that it doesn't impact the receiver. For the other side I was setting the round head rivets into a similar dimple in a steel plate but since I switched to flat-head rivets no dimple required (see today's post on flat-head rivet build in this forum). |
