I think DCI makes the best U.S. stamped Ak receiver on the market today. Their newest models are going to make life unpleasant for the competition.

Please provide some parameters of comparison for a receiver flat to a 100%, fully heat treated receiver.

Thanks.

The AKM receiver is based on the Hungarian SA-85 receiver. Specific tooling has been made to duplicate the mag well dimple and the spot weld pattern will be the same as the original. The top rails will have the step down emboss. The lower rails are based on the semiauto type from the European receiver.

The AK-74 receiver is based on the Bulgarian SLR-105 receiver. Specific tooling has been made to duplicate the mag well dimple, the bottom trigger area emboss and the emboss on the left side selector hole. The spot weld pattern is based on the European receiver. The top rails will have the step down emboss. The lower rails will be duplicates of those found on the Bulgarian semiauto receiver.

Both models of receivers are being made from ordance grade 1.0mm 4130 steel. Each receiver will be fully heat treated to a hardness level in the Rc 40-44 range.

Both models of receivers will be offered without predrilled rivet holes, selector markings or selector detents so that assemblers can precisely fit their own parts, and mark as wanted.

All in all, much emphasis has been placed on making an authentic semiauto version of the European receivers.

Thanks.

So DCI reciever flats are already heat treated?  Will it still be possible to bend them in a bending jig?

There are DCI 100% receivers, but the receiver flats are from NoDak Spud, not from DCI. DCI is not using NoDak Spud receiver flats to make receivers.
The NoDak Spud receiver flat is not heat treated. The lower rails included with the flat are heat treated.

Thanks.

Hopefully the competition will get it in gear, or else they are going to be hurting.  I bought two NDS-3 receivers from Harlan last month, and I couldn't be more impressed.  Every hole lined up PERFECTLY from the first time I slid a trunion into it.  No trimming necessary.  The finish is great as-is, and they're freaking $55!!!!

After working two Tapco flats into shape and doing all the trimming necessary I think I will be going with NDS receivers from now on.

Harlan, thank you for offering this great product to us WECSOG BIY'ers.

A big plus one for NDS 3 receivers!!   I used one for my first build, and everything fit perfectly on my Romanian G3 kit.. every hole lined up,, no problems.  Thanks Harlan..    I'm almost sorry I bought a flat bending jig, but I want to try a couple of flats and see how they come out..  for my own experiance.. but I could have bought three more NDS3s for the same money... hmmmmm ...Les

DCI has posted an update on their NDS-1 and NDS-2 receivers...

www.nodakspud.com/page2.htm

NDS-2    Caliber 5.45x39 for AK74 type kits. Based on the Bulgarian SLR-105 pattern.

Some of the features these new receivers have are;

no pre-drilled rivet holes

authentic top rail step-down

no selector markings/selector stop notches

correct "trigger hump" on bottom of AK74

correct style mag well dimples for each model

correct lower rails w/mag guides and ejectors appropriate to caliber

mag wells cut to correct width for each caliber

custom serial #'s available

fully heat treated 4130 steel

Pricing is as follows;

NDS-1 or NDS-2   qty 1:   $83 shipped    2-5 $80 shipped    6-20 $77 shipped   21+ call

These receivers are not available yet.

On 5/5/06 the first batch had to be rejected due to being out of spec to the blue-print. We don't have a firm date as to when we will get the corrected product. We will post updates here when we have more info.

We are NOT taking pre-orders for these receivers. We do not take money for products that have not been produced/delivered yet.

NoDak Spud will also be offering two models of receivers cut for folding stocks. The first will be a Polish underfolder in 7.62 on the NDS-1 shell.

The second will be an AK74 sidefolder in 5.45 based off of the NDS-2 shell.

These variants will be produced after we have received approved versions of the basic shells. It may take a while, please be patient.

We do not have any idea what pricing will be for the folding stock versions.  DO NOT call or email for pricing, we will post it here when we have that information.

Thanks, Mike and Harlan

I think there will be a pretty big receiver supply here before too long.  Global appears to be caught up, DCI premiums to be available soon and I've heard that the new Eubanks Gen 3's will be out by the end of the year.

A friend of mine has done five builds with the $55 Nodak "Economy" receivers.  Everything always fit perfectly and the quality is exceptional.

When it comes to 80% products, the only brand I have any experience with is Coldsteel.  They are total pieces of shit and I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy.  They are very crudely produced, and they leave extremely rough grind marks on the top rails.  I made the mistake of ordering their lower rail set and Shepherd Hook.  They bend the rails in a bench vise, unpadded, and leave the vise marks on the rails!  The bends are extremely crudely hammered in, and all forming is done with a grinder on both the rail set and the Shepherd Hook!

Basically, I was screwed over by buying the Coldsteel products.  There is nothing "quality" about them, and anyone with a bench vise, hammer and grinder could produce the same products they do.  I figured I'd save a little time and buy their 80% receiver, but I could have built the same thing in the shop in a few hours.  For the money they charge, Coldsteel products should be of a LOT higher quality.

Buyer beware.  I'd look into other brands of pre-bent 80% if that's the way you want to go.

I got my FFL Newsletter from the ATF a few weeks ago.  They talked about the barrel ban there, and said there is an exception for "dual use" barrels.  They said that an application could be made for an import permit for "dual use" barrels.  If the barrel could be used to manufacture both a legal and illegal firearm, then it could be imported again.

So, if that's the case, you can build a "legal" AK with the barrels.  Why wouldn't they be able to be imported anymore?  I hope they actually live up to it and approve the applications.
