Anyone have a suggestion for a first build kit/receiver combo? I've read through the pinned threads, but I'm still going to need some guidance.

Authenticity isn't an issue for my first kit. I'd like a good functioning AK that I can mold into something nice to look at. I'd like an underfolder, but from what I've read, they seem to be a more advanced build and more expensive.

Time frame: 1-2months of build time.

Price limit: $300 total.

Tools available: Basic

TIA

I think the current offering of Romanian kits are a great way for a newbie to get into building AKs. They are very inexpensive, but can be cleaned up into a very nice rifle. Plus, if you screw something up, you won't be out that much. YMMV

+1 and with $300 you can get a romy, all your compliance parts(G2 maybe even a KVar stock), a receiver, put a finish on it yourself, and be right at $300 and have a slick looking rifle

Thanks for the info.

So here's what I bought from www.copedist.com:

Hand Picked
Matching Numbers.( Bolt, Bolt Carrier, Barrel Trunion)
Excellent Condition.
Only Imperfections may be the furniture (Remember these were surplus rifles.).
These are minus the receivers
Cut to B.A.T.F.E. Specs.
Very Limited Qty
Romanian Matching Number Kit and G2 Trigger Group
Qty: Price: $124.99

Newbie question: How do I pick a good receiver to go along with this kit? Does anyone have a suggestion?

TIA.

I have used Gobal trade receivers and have had good luck well decent luck The rails on one of the 74s i'm building were put a 1/8 to far forward but an easy fix.
i've heard  Ewbanks receivers are good you might try that
if you order a Global Trades rec. you might be waiting several months(2+) for the Receiver
hope this helps

Everyone recommends Global Trades and Ewbanks.  I am getting ready to order a Ewbanks for my first build because I don't want to wait several months for the Global trades receivers.

If you know anyone or can find a builder in your area, you should be able to complete your kit under $300.  If you have to buy tools, that could be another story...I'm going through that right now.
