Just about finished my first build - have a problem.

When I let tthe bolt carriewr and gas piston "Slam home", the gas piston end is "stuck" in the gas port, so that I have to take a ruber mallet to the handle to be able to free it and retract the bolt carrier.

U though it might be th enew US made piston, so I removed it and replace it with the original gas piston -> exhibits the same problem.

Suggestions as to what is causing this ?

Could it be the gas port is ever so slightly canted ?

Any tips appreciated....

check the lower rails ill bet its hangin on that and just seems to be the piston

I have to agree with socandyman.  Check your rails.  I had a similar problem on one of my first builds, and the first thing I did was start grinding on the bolt carrier only to find out that it was binding on the rails.  I felt like a boob for improperly troubleshooting my problem.

Also try it without the bolt installed if you haven't already.  See if the problem occurs with only the carrier...  If you are having rails problems you can see a hang-up like this when the bolt lugs bind on the trunnion.

Did you install your gas piston loose enough so that it wobbles?  It should.  Also, I saw a post by one of the commercial builders the other day where he cured a similar problem by cleaning carbon out of the gas block with carb cleaner.

This is a receiver from a flat bend - my first, so that me part of the issues.

I tried it without the bolt, still binds.

I had someone suggest that the front trunion may be off in alignment.....I used rivets, so may have to take it all apart and start from square on with another flat bend.

Just be sure and check the distance between your top rails before you disassemble anything.  That was my problem when my carrier was binding.  I had a narrow spot on my top rails.

I'm a newbie, so forgive this dumb question..

when you say "top rail"...

do you mean the topmost bend on the very top of the flat,

or

the top part of the side rails spot welded on the left and right sides of the receiver ?

This is an easy check.  Put a long cleaning rod in the barrel, sticking back through the receiver.  It should be centered at the back end of the receiver.

Yes, by top rails I mean the bent rails on the top of the receiver that are part of the bent receiver.

Source of Problem found.....

Well, I found the reason the gas piston is binding...

it's NOT the top rails, nor is the bolt or bolt carrier hitting the ejector or ?bottom rails....

WHen I went to try the alignment check, using a long cleaning rod through the barrel, first thing I did was look down the barrel...

The Barrel is BENT......

that is why the gas block angle and the gas piston angle are off with respect to each oter. The barrel is bent, with the muzzle end starting to point upwards towards the sky.

Lesson learned on my first build...Thankfully I used one of the cheaper ROmanian kits...

when using a 12 ton press to press the barrel into the front trunion, be careful not to apply so much pressure that the barrel bends.....
Next time I try the freezer trick.....

Now to figure out how to straighten a barrel...

Thanks to everyone on the advice and tips/techniques....I appreciate it !

That sucks. Torch cut that bbl so nobody gets hurt.

Barrels can be strightened. Would you mind posting the serial number of the kit? I'm starting to wonder something about some of these romy kits.

What is your theory?

dont bother trying to straiten
but you can chop it down and make a pistol :)

+1
... or make a pistol out of it.

That is why you press the trunnion on to the barrel, instead of trying to press the barrel into the trunnion.

can you describe that technique, press the trunion onto barrel, vs. press barrel into trunion.

ANy advice and help appreciated, I don't want to make this mistake again.

Please elaborate.
