Just finished my Yugo AK, my first build (first AK actually). It took longer than I thought to finish, but the wait seems worth it. I've built an AR and an FAL, but this was a whole other animal. It was a little easier than I thought it would be, at times I'd think "this is going smoother than it ought to, I must be doing something wrong". The only thing that I'm concerned about is the action is a little stiff when I hand cycle it, I'm hoping when I get to the range and run a few mags through it it will smooth out a little. Its already better than it was after I oiled the rails and cycled it 30 or 40 times. Overall, I'm happy with the way it turned out. | a common thing is for the rails to be to close. Put your bolt carrier in there, (without the bolt), and see if you can move it side to side a HAIR, and front to back easily. If it is TIGHT, it can or will cause jams. it is common to need to stretch it wider. beleive it or not, this is quite easy, even with a fully heat treated armory receiver. What I do, is stick some type of pliers or dykes in there, and open them up, streatching the receiver widder between the rails. The "sweet spot" is between the center supportand the rear trunion. Closer to the center support. I have needed to do this on about half of my builds. IT is best to remove the safety while you do this, as it may pop out while you are doing it, and be a pain to get back in place. |
The wood is the same that come with the kit. I cleaned it up, stuck it in the oven to pull out the cosmoline, sanded it, and used a couple coats of Tung oil. When I first opened the package I thought it was trashed, but a little TLC and it cleaned up nicely. |
Yes, warm cosmoline does have a distinct odor to it. I live in an apartment, and my roommate mentioned the smell when he got home. You should try curing gunparts coated with hi-temp header paint, THAT smell will knock your socks off. I was afraid the neighbors would think I was cooking meth. |
| LOL I know it does not work as well, but oven cleaner gets cosmo off pretty good. you wont stink up the place with this method either, I found that tip somewhere when I was trying to figure out how the hell to get it off of a couple of VZ-24's that I got once. |
