I know, I should buy the gauges, but I didnt have them this weekend and took a romy G unit out and ran 30 trhough it, first ones, kinda hold the rifle way away and wince then pull trigger. Well That went on for 5 rounds, then I let fly with the other 25 as fast as possible. No hiccups or hangs. So is it safe to say that everything is ok, or should I still have it checked???

Although I never recommend not checking headspace here goes.  Did you check your spent cases after you shot?  You can see signs of over pressure on your cases.  Is this a build where you removed the barrel?  I have to admit that I tied my FIRST build to a post and pulled the trigger with a 150' string, but I have learned a lot since then.

All I use is a no-go. If a stripped bolt will close and rotate properly on assorted live ammo, it is not insufficiently headspaced. If it will not close on a no-go, it is not excessivly headspaced

If you've got deformed/unusually broken cases or blown primers (or stovepipe jams), that's how you know you've got a problem.  AK's normally do dent the heck out of the necks of their cases, so don't be alarmed if you see that.  Be alarmed, though, when you see cases with rims sheared off, primers blown out, or cases that are basically blown apart.

I'd also try to find some ammo with brass cases. Even though > 25k lbs of pressure will most certainly rupture a steel case, marginal headspace problems might be easier to spot using brass.

Look for signs of stretching/cracking near the case head, and primers being pushed out of their pockets. Many times the stretching is not visible on the outside. Take a paper clip bent into a flat ā€œLā€ shape and move it along the inside of the case near the head/web. If stretching is taking place there will be a groove in this area.

I'd really think about getting at least a "Field" gauge (No-Go at the very least). They only run about $25 and peace of mind is a wonderful thing. I'd be bad enough to injure yourself if the weapon KB'd, but injuring someone standing next to you could open up an whole new "can-o-worms".
