It has been great to hang out here and discuss AK's with all of you, but since I started about 4 1/2 years ago, things have changed, both here and with the rest of my life.  I have the worst computer skills in the world and I can't even figure out how to tack a thread. I don't have the time and enthusiasm to monitor this board as it should be.  I love this place and respect the folks who are here, and you all deserve better than I have given here in the last year. Time for someone new who can give this place the kind of attention it deserves. You all are the best!  I thank all of you for what you contribute.  I will still be around but you all need someone who can do more than I do, which , frankly, has been nothing for almost a year. I'll be back in a couple of days and check on this thread and see what's up.   MG34SS

the thought is interesting. I have always wanted to be a mod.

sounds like a lot of work though. I mean, if I'm a mod here, I won't be able to spend as many hours a day LMAO in the genereal discusion.

I'd vollunteer to be an "extra" mod. or maybe a mod ONLY of the AK gunsmith section.

edit: MG34, you've been a great mod.. ;) I mean, it's not like there is a lot of stuff to regulate here in the AK gussmith forum. ;)

even so, I'll take the job if it's offered.

The Mod's job is important.  First you have to promote safty.  There are a lot of dumb ideas you have to encourage people NOT to try.  You have to rely on some gut level experiance.  I've been building guns for 14 years now so I have that feeling for diffrent ideas.   Welding for example.  Some guy wants to weld a trunion to a frame.  "Sure -go ahead, we'll all watch" dosen't make it if you're a Mod.  Is he useing a stick machine or a TIG?  Check with him to be sure he has a grasp of what the process is. Does he understand what happens when a trunion becomes red hot?  etc.  Patience and a thick skin are required.  You have to be willing to take a stand.  Krinkfreak and I got into it when he first showed up.  He is the best of the best, but that didn't stop us from having a disagreement.  I'll confront anyone who is full of shit and who expresses opinions without suport.  This is a real job and it's work.  I wish I could give it the time it deserves.  Anyone can do this, if you have 5 or 6 builds under your belt and love the subject.  There will always be people who know more than you, deal with it gracefully and do the best you can for the newbies.  They are the future, so don't burn 'em.  e-mail me at [email protected] if you are serious.  I work till Thursday, so be patient with me.  You don't have to talk to me at all.  But someone needs to get serious about this board, it's too good to waste.

Thanks mg34ss, you've done good.  The last time I showed intrest in moderating, I was told that I need not know anything of the subject or forum, just how to deal with troublemakers.  So no mod'n for me, so good luck and you have been appreciated by us, the regulars.

Santanatwo has contacted me and seems to be motivated.  He is most welcome.  I will hang out here and all, posting from time to time if I have something relevent to say, but as he took the initiative to write me, he has shown more intrest than anyone else, so the job is his pending Goatboy's aproval.

They even lock my threads in the Survival forum so I'm probably not the right choice

But would like too be a mod though, being a network administrator maybe they will let me (probably not though) My other qualification are I'm armchair commando.

Well, I sent an IM to mg34ss about the moderator position, but it was taken all wrong.  I do indeed think that you should be a paying member of the forum in order to be a moderator.  I think it shows a level of commitment to the community.  And I also think that you should have a decent amount of posts because I think that shows a level of contribution to the discussions.  I am sorry that I came across as having an "attitude".  I assure you that I am VERY interested in helping guys get involved in this great hobby of ours and would do my best to make this a more productive community if I were a moderator.  But I guess that won't be happening......

ETA  Feel free to search my posts/responses in the AK47 forum and if you feel that I have an attitude problem then so be it.

Hi Dale.  I'm happy to welcome you to mod status pending Goatboy's approval.  I have not said you are unqualified to be a mod.  I think you've shown outstanding support for this site and this forum.  I said as much and thanked you in the IM I sent you. I wrote what I wrote you, to see how you would respond and to see your charactor.  You and I are very diffrent people.  We have diffrent priorities and see things from a diffrent perspective. I sit back and see how things develope, only commenting when it's necessary.  You apear quick to judge.  I tend to ramble on and on, your comments are brief, focused, and to the point.  These are traits of personality and both are usefull when aplied to specific circumstances.  I can take a '74 out of the bag and be shooting it on the range in about 4 hours, but I find no joy in that.  I'd rather take a month.  I find the work relaxing and I take my time.  I am also humble, and know there are better builders and more sophisticated shops than mine, and I am not challenged or shamed by those people.  I welcome their insight.  All I really wanted to point out was that the quality and value of insight rairly is enhanced by whether they paid money to support the site or not.  As I've stated before, my computer skills suck worst than a bad Yugo barrel, so I invite you to post the IM's we sent back and forth.  Perhaps some of the others here would have insight we both could learn from.  However, just to follow up on what I said I'd do, I did do a search of your posts. I found them helpful and well thought out.  You know your stuff when it comes to parts count and haven't gotten to the "to heck with the US parts, who cares?" stage, which is good.   I don't like to encourage people to defy the law.  What I'm trying to say is you show good judgement AND self disapline.  Santanatwo is a person who seems to reflect a more laid back style, with no less enthusiasm that you have.  A nice contrast.  I think of you two as a Ying/Yang kind of pair.  Probably good for the board and good for you both to work together.  In the long run,  the members you serve will be the ones who will make or break this forum.  You both have to work out for yourselves how best to serve them. It's a teaching thing.  But post those IM's, I don't know how, and we'll see if I hammered you too hard.  I could use the feedback myself.  Perhaps I'm too laid back!  Heck, I can't even run the spell check right....

[#21]
I don't see a need to post the IM unless you really want me to.  I think what we had was a case of you misunderstanding what I was trying to say and me slightly over-reacting to your IM.  I look forward to possibly being a moderator in conjunction with santanatwo.  I also believe that having a balance is the best thing for this forum run well.

I think being a co-mod would be much better than doing it alone, . And I welcome the opportunity to work togerther, if the administrators choose me for the job.

I also haven't been here for to terribly long either (well I started lurking a year ago, but I didn't join till this year), and I know here are some people here who have been members (and paying members ) a lot longer than me to.

But for what it's worth, building AKs is a passion for me, and I love to do good work and help people learn to do it safely and legaly.

There are several people here who I do look up to also. Socandyman, for one, he is one of the most helpful people I know of. If it were my choice, and he wanted the job, I would give it to him in a heartbeat. I can't even count how many threads where some newbie had a question, and he beat me to it.

I Think you guys are right, I am pretty laid back, and mellow, most of the time.  so having a yin and yang may be the best idea. And I certainly wouldn't want to steal the job from someone who (obviously) greatly desires it.

(awaiting the boards choice) Dan

P.S. What is all this talk about a spell checker?!?!?

There we go!  I think things will be fine.  Your first mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to figure out how to get this information the elusive entity known only as the goatboy.  All my attempts to contact him have failed.  Contact him and insist you both be appointed as Mods fopr the "build it yourself"  forum, with my blessing.  Good luck.  mg34ss  My mod status will self-destruct in 5 seconds... 4...3..2..1 ------------------------poof-----------------------  Now I'm off to play with my favorite toys!   (oYo)  Later!

I've been a mod in the AK reloading forum and the Florida forum for some time.

It's the laziest job in the world.  Who reloads for AKs?

The Florida crew is pretty tame, too.  I can't ever remember having to use my Moderator Smack.

mg34ss Thank you very much for your dedication and time helping us with the site. I have said it many many times before, we would be lost without the Mods.

Well YeeHaa!  The staff here got the new Mod's names up already!  Excellent! The new mods here have their work cut out for them.  There are more posts in this forum than anywhere else but the AK general forum.  Half the posts there are posts that probably should have been in the "Build It" forum anyway. There should have been two mods here for quite some time and now there are. The future looks bright to me.  In the unlikely event that anyone would miss me, Ha!  I'm not going anywhere.  I'll still be around. I go to the AR side too, mostly in the full-auto forum on account of my M-16.  The only thing that bugs me is not getting the info. I need here and having to look around for it elsewhere.  With new Mods, the photo posting stuff and all the other changes goatboy is doing, I think that will start to change. The reason I feel someone else needs to be a mod is that this place, this forum, deserves the attention of mods that are here and really have a passion for this.  I lost the passion and sence of urgency, that...  connection thing.  Dalesimpson and Santannatwo have it. They will both be a blessing for this forum and I welcome them both.  I'm going to have to get my butt to Bulletfest too.  My wife is still complaining we didn't go.

Well great, now there's no Mods at all.  55,000 AK kits are being sold, and the staff has seen fit to remove all the mods.   Beureauctatic non-sence is truely the single constant in the universe.  At the rate things are going, I'll be banned and this post will be gone tomorrow morning.  I don't have patience for this stuff.  All I ever wanted was to keep people safe and help.  You people here in the trenches are paying attention to the board.  The staff is not. So rally around these two guys and you tell them ( the staff) what's up. After the letter I wrote  tonight, I won't be very welcome here anymore!

mg34ss,

You're always welcome here.

The staff does pay attention to the BIY forum.  It has been running smoothly under your moderation and no known problems have been noted.  There are quite a few knowledgeable individuals posting in here, helping fellow members with their builds, repairs, etc.

I have never been contacted by you or anyone else requesting assistance.  Did you notify any other staff member?

No bureaucratic nonsense here.  Just precautionary measures being applied before the owners hand a limited set of AR15.COM keys to someone new.  I assume Bob King vouched for you when he submitted your name to the owners and made you a moderator.

If you still need a moderator, santanatwo might be willing to fill the spot. He did a nice pictoral on building an AMD here a few months ago. He has also posted some pictures of a chromed AMD AK pistol that is a head turner.

Hey on a more serious note whoever becomes a mod tack up a post with all the different kits available and pros and cons of each. Include the price. There seems to be a lot of questions about what kit to buy for new people.

Well, I guess I made a mess, said some nasty stuff to some of the staff here and generaly conducted myself like the nut cases I usually make fun of at Donutz-AK.com.  I screwed up and I apologise to you all, staff and board members alike. I should have contacted the staff and informed them before I made the first post. There is a process used here to select mods, of which I was unaware. The staff has indicated to me that there is a person they have in mind who has vast experiance with AK's and he sounds like the best person to be a Mod.  If he chooses to take this job, it would be good for the board.   Should he accept the job, I know all of us will give him the support he deserves and we can all get back to building.  As a final note: I am an opinionated person with a singular perspective.  I would be perfectly happy having Dalesimpson and Santanatwo modding the board.  The point is, however, that it's NOT my board.  Additionally I am out of touch with the personel and the resources the staff is aware of.  Finally, with their broader perspective and resposibilities, they are in a better place than myself to make informed choises about who should be appointed as Mods. With my isolation and lack of a broad perspective in one hand, my absence of authority and inadiquate resources in the other, with my embarassment over my rude behavior to the staff fresh in my mind, should this position not be filled as planned, I respecfully submit Dalesimpson and Santannatwo as alternate candidates for the staff to review.  I think their track records on the board speak for them well.  I know the staff will be making an informed and ballanced choise and whatever they do, it will be for the future health and quality of the "build it" forum. In making this nomination, I insist that I am not trying to "second-guess" the staff or compromise their freedom to chose whom they see fit. I will accept, welcome, and support whomever they apoint.   Tom
