I went to a gunshow last weekend and I picked up a new unfired AMD kit!! I think it's a 65, it has a side folder stock and a 12" barrel.  The guy dident know much about it.
This is going to be my first build. I really want to build a pistol. Should cut up the side folder to use as the rear trunion, or should I buy a special made pistol trunion?  I dont like the AMD hand guards, how hard will it be to change over to wood?  Will I have to change the gas tube??
Hey Socandyman, any chance I can get your help on the rivets???

Yeah... after seeing how much they went up in a short time, I definitely wouldn't hack on the folder trunion.  Buy one of the custom made pistol trunions if you are doing a pistol build.

I was going to do a pistol build with one of the three kits I have, but after seeing the price jump so much, I think I'll do them all in proper configuration.  I wouldn't do any permanent mods to the kit, but that's just me.

Sounds like you need to chop the barrel of a Romy kit and sell/build the AMD up right!  The things that make the AMD the AMD (unique) are the side folder and handguards.--the things you don't like.  I'd say be a purist and chop up a Romy kit.  Even if you got it cheap, it's worth more to someone else or you in the future--an opportunity cost.  Good luck either way.

Turning an AMD-65 into a pistol is easy...  Making a pistol out of a Rommy kit is not!

My AMD-65 pistol build uses the standard AMD-65 rear trunion.  I did not cut the notch for the folder and I did not cut the holes for the pins...  Someone is sure to post that I can't do that as the pistol could have a stock added...  BULL as I have an AR-15 pistol and it would take me far less time to add a stock to that then the AMD-65!

Yea, the pistol looks a little funny with the space behind the rear trunion open but so what?  If it bothers you you can always find some steel or even soft metal and cut a puece to fill the hole.  Then you might need to drill out the holes for the pins and use the original AMD-65 pins to hold this piece in place.

This way, if you get the AMD-65 built as a pistol and some day decide you want to SBR it you can pay your taxes and get the forms back and put a stock on it or you can extend the barrel and add a stock for a rifle.

I don't shot my AMD-65 pistol much but it does work just fine....

Now, you also asked about using traditional wood on the front.  This is easily done by buying a standard AK gas tube and expanding it by pressing a socket down it...  then cut it off and add the grips.  If you do some searches yu can find more specific info as lots of guys have done that in the past.  I planned to do it with mine but never got around to it but I could probably do it and get pics up if I find the time... I did buy the parts to do it with.

Good Luck!

If that was the kit for sale at the Albany gun show last weekend, it was  VERY beautiful kit, made my mouth water.  If you want to get rid of the wood grips for something else let me know as I'd love to put wood on my AMD.

Damn, I missed that show. I would have picked it up FIRST if I would have seen it.

Buy a pistol trunnion, it is much easier. I did the whole "rear trunnion mod" on my first one and it was a pain. Not to mention you can sell the folder with the rear trunnion for a reasonable price (hell I might buy it from you if you don't want it).

I agree with QuarterBore, cutting down a romy requires a lot more work than simply building up an AMD 65 pistol.

Good luck!

Yea, this kit is in great shape!! I swaped a worn walther P1 for it. I was thinking of useing the rear trunion just take off the butt stock, maby glueing a peice of sheet  metal over the hole, so if I dont like the pistol I can change it back to a rifle with a barrel extention and compliance parts.  But then again I really dont like the look of the AMD with the barrel extention, and I have a friend with a SKS with a folding stock that I really dont enjoy shooting!

Hey, rjb_213 is that bottom one stock barrel lenght?? That looks exactly like what I want to build, only with dark wood!!!! How hard was it to modify the gas tube???
10/1/2005 8:37:39 AM EDT
[#12]
Not hard.  Just cut the tube to length (remember to leave a little extra just in case because you can always file it down).  Heat the end toward the muzzle with a torch and get it hot, stick it in a vice and bang a socket (with graduating sides) down it with a hammer. That will flare out the end a little. Then check for fit.

I think I need to make another one now looking at those babies....

I sure wish I'd bought more than 2 of the AMD kits when they were $105.

I just bought one of the AMD-65 kits also and am torn now on turning it into a pistol or a Post-86 machinegun with a demo letter.  Decision...decisions!  Either way I could convert it over to the other configuration later if I wanted/needed to, or I could just buy another kit and be done with it.

If you make it into a Post-sample, I'll Demo it for you

Ok.... that looks REALLY cool!

But my question is doesn't the front handguard get hot seeing as the AMD handguard is metal?

How the hell do you shoot it without the front grip???

Maybe grab the mag?

I dunno... just doesn't look like it'd be easy to shoot without burning myself or shooting into other shooters lanes!

yep it gets vary hot vary fast
you have to wear a thick glove or shoot 1 mag and wait 20 min

its simple to change tho cut the little lips and punch the pins and it will take a standard hg (under 15 min)

I actually never shot it that way; I was waiting on parts so I just threw it on for the pic. You can see the sheen is different on the lower compared to the rest of the pistol.

Time to make another one.... but no screws this time... I broke down, sold some stuff and bought some tools. They work great!!

Punch what pins, cut what lips?

Not required, simply remove old tube and bottom HG with pistol grip, place new wood lower HG in padded vice, use dremel/coping saw remove approx .250" from front flange (normal to the plane of the barrell,)  Top portion heat, swage with socket extension, cut long then file to fit.
