I'm trying to locate a 1/2x28 LH tap.  Since the AK has this type of thread on the muzzel I thought someone here might be able to point  me in the right direction to buy one.  Can anyone help?hinking.gif

Thanks

1/2-28 is an American thread and we use it to thread barrels not already threaded that were turned down to be import compliant.  The majority of AK's are threaded 14x1 LH...never seen one threaded 1/2-28 and left hand thread.

Thanks, I assume your reference to 14 x 1 is metric - which I don't know how to convert, especially in thread pitch.  I  mic'd my  AK47 (Hungarian - assembled in the US) and the muzzel thread certainly appears to be 28 tpi (using a thread gage) and is left handed.  However the dia. mic'd .550.  Is that the metric equivalant to 1?

Sounds like the muzzle is standard 14x1 LH metric, or what almost all '47's, AKM's, etc. were originally threaded.  Taps are readily available but since a ton of muzzle devices are made with that thread, both US and foreign, they would be cheaper than buying the tap or die.

What are you wanting to do?

The conversion would be 25.4 threads to the inch. Easily mistaken for the AR 28 threads to the inch. Use a 13mm drill for the 14x1 thread left or right hand. Taps and dies are  available from several tool companies and are not expensive. I measured several Romy unthreaded barrels and they are .503. So- there are possibilities here if you have the right equipment.

Just for the heck of it I decided to finish removing the threads from a Romy barrel(the ones with the cap welded on) and see if it would match the size needed to thread it 1/2x28. I did this the hard way on purpose-a file then strips of coarse emory cloth. Anybody could duplicate this method with very little outlay of cash. I polished it down to .485 (the old threads were still barely discernable-a good reference point) and guess what? That is just fine for threading to 1/2x28. No problem, looks great, works great.
Since I bought a box of dies and taps from a place in Guntersville,Alabama for $24(kind of like a flea market for tools years ago-$2 a piece) I like threading stuff to 1/2x28. Any .30 caliber attachment will fit. Just a thought anyway. The whole deal only took an hour.

Thanks, appreciate the input from everybody.  You've given me enough to go on.  Thanks again.

Metric thread sizes are expressed with a "x" seperating the outside diameter from the distance between any two corisponding points from one thread to the next thread i.e. 14x1mm.
The size of threads in the english system of measurment the outside diameter is expressed in fractions of a inch seperated by a "-" from the number of threads per inch i.e. 1/2-28.
All threads are right hand that is they turn clockwise unless the thread size has a "LH" on the end which stands for left hand. Which means the  threads turn counterclockwise.
The AK-47 and AKM rifles have the barrels threaded 14x1mmLH and AR-15/M-16 rifles have 1/2-28 threads on the barrels.
