After screwing up and having to drill out a barrel pin to remove a barrel off a Rom kit, I adverised in the EE for a barrel pin. Snpr_Matic suggested getting some drill rod and making my own.
Well, hell! I have a couple of 7mm drill bits! I'm going to cut the shank of one to the length I need (with a dremel cutoff wheel at high speed) and round the corners off to install it!
Great advice from Snpr_Matic!

Let me play devil's advocate for a moment, you might want to consider exactly what type of drill bit to use. somehting to soft may warp. Something to hard may shatter. I doubt they make a drill bit that's to soft, but I may be wrong.

I guess you could do the ol' file test to compare hardness.

One sharp guy, socandyman, has already suggested annealing the bit. I had thought about that already - I'll take it to red hot with a oxy/acetylene rig, then let it do a slow cool. That should do it. I'll do the "hammer" test before installing it. Using a file is another good idea!
Thanks, D!

OBVIOUSLY MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THAT DRILL SHANKS ARE DEAD SOFT, WHY DO YOU THINK THEY GET GALLED WHEN THEY SLIP. THE MAN WAS RIGHT WHEN HE SAID DRILL ROD WHICH YOU CAN BARELY FILE. ONE OF MY PINS HAD SOME BURRS SO I JUST HIT THEM WITH A FILE AND THE BURRS DISAPEARED, THAT DOESN'T MAKE THEM REAL HARD IN MY EXPERENCE. EXCUSE THE SPELLING ERRORS . GOOD LUCK
