I built an AK74 in November, I took it out a few times and had plenty of problems with it not feeding the round. I bought a few different magazines and that didnt seem to help at all. The only thing I noticed was some copper from the rounds on the front trunion. Its hard to explain but this is the best I can do. the magazine fits right under part of the trunnion where the copper residue is. I wish I had a camera right now :( . At any rate could that be my problem with feed? Thanks in advance. Another thing crossed my mind, when I was doing the build the receiver I bought didnt have a magazine catch or hole in the trigger gruard. I drilled a hole my self and put in a magazine catch. Could a difference in placement with the magazine catch change how the bullet is presented to the bolt? -R |

is your magazine at all loose in there? here is how you check for feed reliability (ask me how I know) load up a clip, and take off your top cover. now, put the clip in, and pull back the bolt. ease the bolt down untill it just touches the cartridge. now, yank on your mag and see how much you can make it wiggle. The bolt should engage the cartridge by at least 1/8". If it is barely touching the cartridge (or worsde, if you can pull down on the mag and make the bolt ride over the cartridge) then you need to take out your mag catch, and extend it a little (add with weld). that is the easy fix. The hard fix is to take out your front truniion and move it backwards untill everything is snug. Yea, it's possible you didn't put the mag catch far enough forward. that would probably have a negative effect. So, check how your bolt engages the cartridges. Then let us know. |
| Did you build on a OOW receiver? If so this is VERY common with 74 builds. OOW receivers are out of spec in more ways then one. Most require the selector stop to be milled, filed or ground down thinner for the mag to seat in its proper position. Insert a mag and have a look to see how big of a gap there is between the rails and the rear of the mag lips. There should not be a gap there. |
Well, let's just say they not top of the line recievers. It might be the distance from the rail to the mag, in which case as was stated above"If it is barely touching the cartridge (or worse, if you can pull down on the mag and make the bolt ride over the cartridge) then you need to take out your mag catch, and extend it a little (add with weld) as well as milling the safty catch,to bring the mag up to functioning level. |
