| Hey guys, I have an AR15, SKS, and I had an Egyptian Maadi AK47 with 10 round mag. at one time, but sold it. Now I'm thinking about building an AK. I've found several sources for the OOW stamped receiver, are these OK? Also I was wondering if these receiver's work with the Yugo M70 kits? Just about everyone I've talked to or read on some forums, that Romanians AK's are junk, is this true? Also I've heard about compliant parts, what is this, and would I need them for an AK build? Basically I need to know everything for a first time AK builder. Thanks |

a great FAQ thread for you to read secondly, the romanian rifles arent as nice as some of the others but they work fine. the OOW receiver will not work with a yugo kit as the yugo uses a front trunnion from an RPK and is different than a standard AKM which the OOW is meant to be used for. your best bet would be to wait until june when centerfire gets their new shipment of Hungarian AMD63 kits in. the hungarian rifles are some of the best ever made. ETA: building AK rifles is a ton of fun and it makes for a rifle that is truly yours |
| I got my romanian kit in great condition and compared it to my amd65 is same condition. Romanians left a lot of small tool marks whereas hungarians all the parts are smooth and nice. I will tell you they both will get the job done. Definitely not junk. If you wanted to get started I would buy a romanian kit off of Scott on the EE for $100 plus shipping. |

General rule of thumb: you need 5 US made parts if you do NOT have a muzzle device (ANYTHING ON THE MUZZLE, Flash hider, brake, whatever), IF YOU DO HAVE A MUZZLE ATTACHMENT then you need 6 US parts. Generaly those parts are ; pistol grip, hammer, disconecter, trigger, gas piston, muzzle attachment, upper & lower handguard (both must be replaced to count as one part), butt stock, and the receiver. You can mix and match to get 5 or 6 parts. Also the mag body, follower and base plate each count as one part, but most, as myself, will advise against it because it limits the mags you can legaly use (useing that cool new drum would be a fellony!). Go to www.tapco.com for most of these parts. Check out the combo deal, you get everything needed (exepct receiver) for $59.99. |
