I am trying to get my arms around how I want to build.

Due to lack of tools etc. I am thinking of doing a screw build.  Other than asthetics what are the reasons to not screw build?

Can you weld? Friend with a TIG?

It was my expeirence that you really need to press out the barrel even for a screw build, wich I did not want to do, so I screw built everything but the front 4 holes on the front trunnion, I welded those, it made things way easier.

Reasons not to screw build: 1.If you're a purist, who wants a 100% authentic AK.
2. if you're a top notch welder, welding is even quicker.
3.If you're using a 100% receiver and think you may want to sell the weapon later a rivet build is worth more.

I built my first 6 AK with screws.  Then when I learned how darn easy it was to rivet I took all the screws out and riveted them.  It isn't as hard as you may first think to pull your barrel and re-press it after riveting.  Also, you do not need a press or fancy rivet tools.  I wish that I had done all my builds from the beginning with rivets, but re-doing them did give me something to do while waiting for new kits to arrive.

Well . . .

I seen NOTHING wrong with a screw-build if you take your time and do it right . . .

I've build a couple of screw-builds on Vulcan receivers -- pre-drilled.  I used button-head hex screws and when I was finished I filled the "hole" with J-B Weld and sanded it off flush.  Couple of light coats of Brownell's Aluma-Hyde II in matte black and you would swear it was a rivet build.

I'm now building a couple more (AMD-63's) for a friend and one for me on a Romy kit.  All to be built on OOW receivers and all to be rivet-builds.  Not really any more difficult that the screw-build, just a little more time.

If you only build one (is that possible ? ? ? ?) a screw-build is fine -- more than one you might want to consider rivet-builds.

Billy....  Do you actually know anybody who when it is all said and done builds just ONE??

I hope you didn't misread what I meant in my last post.  I also see NOTHING wrong with a properly done screw build.  I was just saying that once I learned how to rivet I went back and riveted all my previous builds.  Hell, I don't even disagree with "weld builds"!

Mr. dale . . .

you have a VERY good point -- build just one ?!?!?!?!?

I will have to agree that these kit-build AK's are VERY habit forming  ! !     I've got three more to do now  ! !

We have a group of AK's lovers here in Ohio and we all "pitch in" on the builds -- one guy will fit the trunnions and drill the holes, one guy will rivet, one guy will finish the stocks . . .

You get the idea /! !  And we can build a lot  ! ! !

Anyway . . . after a while you say "What's next ?!?!?!"

Hope you guys are having as much fun as we are . . . .
