BBQ paint (on the barrel at least), or Krylon camo enamel, both work well IMO.
Here's what ya do, fill a bucket with hot water (or the kitchen sink), put the spray can in there to warm up, pre-heat your kitchen oven to 200F/225F, with your weapon/all parts to be painted preped (degreased & sanded), spray them in a few light coats, then thro them in the oven. MAKE SURE THE OVEN IS OFF, AS EVEN AT A LOW SETTING IT WILL BURN THE PAINT IF THE ELAMENTS COME ON! If you wish you can apply more coats later.

I've been useing 1500 degree header paint from Walmart with good results.  I clean the parts with brake clean and then preheat the parts to about 140 paint then back into the oven at 250 or so for about 2 hrs. I've never had any problems with the  the paint burning.

Does it stand up to gun cleaner solvent?

I havent had a problem but I have heard that break cleaner and other "non gun solvents" can take it off. I havent tried it though. I have had nice results with it and have heard lots of positive comments about it if your looking for cheap.

i bake it at 285 for hour then stick the paint in the freezer for 30 min
and give it a second coat then bake for another 2
if you get can super cold it will spary a kind of textured finish that i like alot better just make shure you get a nice even coat with the can warm first it dosnt stick well when its cold on bare metal
also if you try and find some high temp epoxy paint that shit is tuffer than GK

I haven't tried any real strong gun cleaners on it, just stuff like gun scrubber and it's been ok with that.

I just sprayed mine with Alumahyde II from Brownells. The BBQ paint worked OK, I just wanted to use something a little stouter and resistant to solvents. The upside is the Alumahyde is less than $8 not including shipping. If you need other items besides the Alumahyde then it is worth ordering.
Another down side is it takes a week to cure if you don't heat it.  Momma has a new house and would scalp me if I baked a gun in spanking new kitchen.
Waiting a week has cost me. I had to order another kit to keep me busy!
There is enough Alumahyde left to do at least two, maybe three  more kits. I sure hate not to use my remaining Alumahyde!

How hot and how long to bake

I found that the AlumaHyde II didn't stand up to gun cleaners.  So it's back to the GunKote bake-on finish (which does hold up againsnt cleaners).

I've used Brownells Teflon/Moly finish on two AKs and I haven't been to impressed with its durability.

I've used Dupli-Colors High Temp Paint with Ceramic additive and I've been impressed with it so far.

I just did my first build with Gun Kote and I think this has been one of the best products I've used so far.

I have an AR that I'm going to use DuraCoat on, but I just haven't tried it yet.

7.62 - I was told that 120 to 140 for 4 to 6 hours would cure the epoxy. 90 to 100 in a couple of days. I am just using room temp. It'll do for a cheap and durable finish.
With Gunkote, the finish will chip or flake off if the gun is not properly prepared and still might chip even it if is.
Alumahdye is a "self etching paint" meaning it will stick well to degreased metal. It holds up weill to almost all solvents. If you use some acidic gun cleaner, well... I wouldn't worry too much about the finish.
Both GunKote and Alumyhde have advantages and disadvantages.

I would suggest GunKote or MolyResin.

I second moly resin but engine paint is pretty tough stuff. The thing I dont like about engine paint is paint thinner will take it off. With moly resin you can wipe the treated area with paint thinner and it will not come off.

I use gunkote on everything and I've yet to be able to strip it off with any chemical.

I used to use the "British Black" years ago.  I have an RPK build here I did almost 15 years ago and it's still in great shape..... Now I use either Duracoat or Molyresin but for the price, you can't beat the Laquer.

For those of you who use gunkote anyone ever use THIS on your metal before using gunkote?  Also, I got a kit thats in great physical condition but the finish is only about 60%.  How would I safely strip the original finish to apply gunkote?

Do you have to spray K-Phos on or do you dip it?

New question - what's the best finish, that also _closely matches_ the original finish?  (say, for an AMD65)

Hate to drag this thread up but I didnt want to waste a new thread on my question.  I'm thinking of giving my Romy a facelift but was wondering if I should wait until I have the kit assembled on my OOW receiver or just paint the parts seperately before assembling?  Its only got about 60% original finish but the metal itself is fine, I just want to get my gunkote on it.
