How is the original gas piston fixed to the bolt carrier besides being threaded? Pinned?
And how do you replace it with a US compliant part?
Thanks!

It is pinned.

Sand off the paint right behind where it is threaded into the carrier. You should then see the two ends of the pin. One is larger, meaning it only drives out one way. Once you drive the pin out the piston unscrews. You can find US made ones if you look around. Simply screw in the new one and drill it and drive the pin in.

I have bought AMD gas pistons from Tapco. They didn't come with a new pin so I just used a steel  nail that fit, flattened each side and ground them flush.  Worked fine.

I've removed many gas pistons, I've never seen one with a tapered pin.
What variant was this?

I have yet to see a tapered pin...  unless I am just that damn lucky....  I always just remove the countersink on the top and punch the remained out...  I have yet to have any problems with that method.

I have only done one on my AMD 65 it looked tapered but I could be wrong. I never mic'ed it. It seemed to fit in tight like a taper pin, but again I could be wrong.

They are not tapered they are just peened over big time on both ends.
