Ok so I know how to build up an AK from a Barreled receiver but dont really know how to romove the barrel and do the whole rivit thing.

I really want to know how to build myself an Ak from a kit using rivits but dont know where to start. (well sort of but not really).

Any advice from some of you first got started and what to watch out for?

Like most things theres more than one way to skin this cat. A shop press in very handy(HF $99) but not mandatory as the old BFH will suffice. The best advice I can give you is to go to the OTHER Ak website and do a search for Pookies tutorial on building. Its free and you can't buy better info on building AKs. I have built many AKs and still go there from time to time just to see the latest updates on tricks and ideas. It will answer just about any question you can come up with building with screws or rivets. Go to Kvars website and see the rivet tutorial and understand why the rest of the world uses rivets.

Press out the two barrel pins with a vice, then press out the barrel with a press our hammer it out with some rebar and pennies in front of the chamber.  Once the barrel is out you can rivet in the trunnion to the reciever with Plinkers rivet jig or some modified bolt cutters or a riveter.  Then press the barrel back in, check headspace, reinstall barrel pins.

Pookie did a good job documenting one way to do it.

Well I went to a friends house who builds AK's himself.  I brought over my AK74 barrel with trunion and he offered to help me build the AMD and the AK74 and he even knocked out the barrel and rivits out of the 74 kit.

here is a pic

the reason why I asked about the 2 barrel pins was becase he only knocked out 1.

To do it properly you are going to need some specialized tools. The riveting process can be accomplished with a modified bolt cutter as illustarted on Pookie's siteHERE He also has some useful information about different aspects of building. I personally use a Plinker762 jig, he should be able to be emailed at [email protected] To get the barrel in an out it's not neccessary to use a xebec jig, but some aspects of it make it easier. Look on goonsnet to contact him. I saw one for sale in the classified section on Gunco.net HERE
Lot's of info is available HERE on building the AK.

There is only one barrel pin.

The plinkers jig is for riviting or removing the barrel?

BTW, My friend removed the Barrel from the trunion in about 3 minues, my jaw just hit the floor watching how fast he did it.

He set the Barrel on a Anvil and punched out the barrel pin, removed barrel pin and took off rear site.  He then put the barrel in a 12 ton press and pushed the barrel out then just puched out the rivits. This guy made AK building look like childs play

he used what looks to be the same as this pic to knock out the barrel

the plinker jig does the rivets, the xebec jig does the barrel.   The barrel has to be removed to press the rivets.

A plinker jig:

Xebec jig :

Some rivets I did using the Plinker jig:

I just looked at pookie site on how he removed his barrel pin and barrel and his method seems too complex

While Pookie's may not be the easiest way to do it but it works for him.  He is or was trying to do things with the tools he had available at that time..  I believe that he has upgraded some tools in his shop, so I don't know if he still does it those ways?

Its not rocket surgery You must have either a large shop vise or a 12 ton shop press to remove the barrel pin. Once the pin is removed the barrel will come out easily with a hammer or the press. You just need to support the trunnion and use a large bolt or rod with a coin or similar soft metal taped to the end to keep from damaging the breech.

No vise or press for my barrel pin, he just punched it out with a good ole hammer and punch.
