Ok, got my AMD kit from Bocefus (Thing is Brand New) and I want to replace the forward grip with a standard wood grip. Is this possible? I already removed the metal shroud...I know I will replace the rear grip with a black plastic part, but I wanted to know how hard is it to get something from a Standard looking AK for the forward grip?
Please send me whatever ideas you have..
Thanks
Alex

The lower handguard off of another AK will fit on a AMD-65, but the upper handguard can be the problem.  There are some aftermarket ones available that the upper doesn't attach to the gas tube, but attaches to the lower handguard.  Another thing people have done is to use a regular upper handguard with the regular gas tube, but shorten the gas tube and reflare it so it fits.

Is there any sort of upper handguard that would go over the existing tube? Basically a hollow wood matching piece that uses the tube to lock it into place on the lower handguard?

You can cut down a standard AK gas tube and re-flare the end with a 3/8" socket extension.

Check out the "Galil" style from TAPCO.

Here are a couple of options. Both are builds from AMD-65 kits for customers.

This first one I used a standard retainer. You wil need to punch the pins out  of the sight base and gas block then press both from the barrel. Remove AMD-65 retainer and slide the new standard AK retainer on. Press the gas block back on, press the sight base back and repin both.

The gas tube is a standard non vented tube, cut down and reflared.

This second one, the original AMD-65 retainer was used. Your wood does need to be modified to fit. You will need to remove a bit from the upper portion of the section which slides into the retainer. The AMD retainer is a bit shorter. This is by far the quiker way.

Same story as above on gas tube.

josh you can also cutout the top of the amd retainer so you dont have to mod the guard : )
but by far the easyest way is to use a galil style grip
