I am looking for options for permanently extending the barrel of my next AMD65 build.  Are there any other options besides the AMD-65 look-a-like muzzle breaks?  If so could someone direct me where and photos if possible?  Thanks.

For a while, TAPCO sold barrel extensions intended to be used with the original Brake to get the 16" total length.
I haven't measured them, but perhaps they will give you the overall length when used with a 74 style brake.
I haven't seen the barrel extensions advertised lately thought, maybe someone has one for sale?

You can get a barrel extension from Tapco, and permanently attach it in the normal ways.  That's what I used for my AMD build

How do you permanently attach it?  Can I solder with regular flux core solder?  Do I need to tack weld it?

Thanks,
Glenn

www-2.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/user/wbardwel/public/nfalist/atf_letter40.txt

"...A muzzle device, such as a muzzle brake or barrel extension, which
is attached to a barrel by means of welding or high temperature
silver solder having a melting point of at least 1,100 degrees
Fahrenheit, is considered to be part of the barrel for purposes of
measurement.  A seam weld extending at least one-half the
circumference of the barrel or four equidistant tack welds around
the circumference of the barrel are adequate for this purpose.

A firearm having a muzzle brake, cap, or barrel extension
permanently attached by those same methods to cover the threads on
a barrel, would not be considered to have a threaded muzzle.
Please note, however, that any muzzle device or barrel extension
which functions as a flash suppressor or grenade launcher would
still constitute one of the qualifying features of a semiautomatic
assault weapon as that term is defined in 18 U.S.C. section
921(a)(30(B).  Industrial adhesive products are not an acceptable
method for permanently attaching a muzzle device."

Note that a muzzle nut does not perform a function as a flash hider or grenade launcher.  As such, a muzzle nut does not count on the list as a muzzle attachment.  It's a moot point for the AMD-65, but worth mentioning for other rifles.

A muzzle nut would count as a muzzle attachment for the purpose of 922 (r) compliance (an evil foreign part), but not as an evil feature of the now defunct AWB.

I'm finishing up a couple G1 flashiders that have been machined to screw onto standard AK rifles (14x1LH). These have been cut down to 4 1/2"  to meet length requirments on the '65. Heres a pic of the prototype installed on my 65. Should have 3 more available in a few days.

I like the look of the 5 slot FAL flash hider.

The traditionalists will howl, but that is sweet.

I'm in for one, if you have some available.

Can silver solder be done by the home "gunsmith" doing a build?  Or it is beyond the temp. reach of home tools?  Any guess what a gunsmith would charge to do just this one bit of work?  My AMD build with need such assistance.

MAPP gas get hot enough for silver solder.

I used this silver solder paste for my 65. Apply to barrel and brake and screw brake onto barrel then  heat to cherry red . I used a oxy-acetylene torch but others swear by mapp torches that you can get at places like Home Depot.

I dont think the G1 will look as "normal" as the Tapco extended brake but it sure has to be a lot lighter. I hate having to add over 1/2 lb to the end of a barrel to keep it legal. so I just bought the G1 converted flashider and a tapco extended brake. I'll use the one I like the best when they arrive.

What I would like to see is someone make a 74 type brake with an extension machined right on it the same diameter as the AMD barrel, or an extension machined the diameter of the existing barrel with a slant brake machined on the end of it. At least we'd have a few more options.  Lets hear from some others so we can put  a "bug" in the ear of these guys with machine shop access. There's a awful lot of these kits out there that aren't all going to be built into pistols that will need something on the end of there barrels!

The G1's are finished! Only 2 left for $30 apiece. I will be posting pics on equipment exchange shortly.

RPB has a extended Krink cone type of brake that looks kinda cool for $20
