The dustcover should barely hang over the rod that goes from the top of the bolt to the gas piston. SO unless the ejector is in the wrong place, and it's taking WAY to long for the case to hit the ejector and it's hitting the dustcover after the opening. Make sure your ejector is in the right place and is in good condition. |

Well then it's either a dustcover thats way wrong or the extractor is f-ed up. Play with the extractor a little. It should be pretty easily moved with your finger. It should also move smoothly. Slide a shell casing into the bolt face with the bolt removed. You should be able to pretty easily push a round striaght back to the bolt face and the extractor should snap around a nd positivelt hold the cartridge inplace. I cant imagine the dustcover being the cause of the problem(unless its out of place or really tweaked). The part of the bolt carrier that connects to the gas piston is directly above the bolt. If it was really trying to extract straight up it should hit the bolt carrier. Maybe put the empty casing in the bolt and jerk the bolt back by hand and see how it extracts. Is the dustcover interfering with the bolt carriers movement. If it is draging or binding somehow it could be slowing the bolt down enought to cause your problem. What kind of 74 is it? |
I was thinking the same thing. How to check: Remove dust cover, remove recoil spring, operate bolt buy hand, slide bolt back until you can see the bolt-face and the slot for the ejector. You can easily see if the ejector is too short. It will not enter the counter-bore for the case on the bolt. What is probably happening is the next round is taking the place of the ejector forcing the casing up instead of to the right. Samuel |
