Is this how it is supposed to be installed? Could I cut off the coil spring since it appears to serve no purpose in semi auto?

Wack that faqer off.  The coiled portion is for the full auto hammer retarder.  Snip it off and it is a totally serviceable retainer.

Barrel extension, and still have the US gas tube to install. Just couldn't resist test firing to make sure it was mechanicaly sound.

Point taken. Rifle will be disassembled until 100% complete.
