I have decided to start building my own AK's, and with the price so low on these AMD65 kits right now, I think that is what my first build will be. I have been reading up and procratinating on building one up for a couple of years now, so I have a good idea of what I am getting into (I am planning on screwing togehter). My concerne is that I am not all that familiar with the AMD65/63, is there anything that I should know? anything that needs doing/ommited, that is particular to this version of AK (aside from the obvious barrel extension needing to be welded). Is it possible to use the normal style wood handguards on a 65 without major modifications to the bbl/trunion?

If you want to build a "normal" looking AK, spend the extra $ and get a "normal" kit to start with.

Yes, you can make the mods on an AMD kit but when you are finished, you will be spending just as much.

Actually I kind of like the look of the AMD 65, I am just wondering how durable the sheet metal handgurads are, I can see these being very hard to come by in a couple of years. I already have enough, normal AK's, I am just wondering if there will be parts compatability issues if something breaks down the road after the kits have long since dried up. If it trivial to replace these parts (other than the expense of buying the parts) then I wont worry about it, if it a issue I may pick up a couple of spare kits in case I need the parts. So far it seems to me that the internal parts are standard stuff as well as the front trunnion, the only real difference seems to be cosmetics.

Actually what I like is the evilness of the AMD 65, it is all black, so it is obviously "tactical", plus any anti gun type knows that pistol grips make a perfectly nice rifle evil, so having two can only make it twice as evil, I figure that an AK with two pistol grips will probably be able to penetrate a cops body armor at 2000 yards (according to the "stop handgun violence" people a normal AK can do it at a thousand yds).

The lower handgaurds are pretty stout. I don't think you will ever have a problem with them. If you want to make it look like this:

all that is nessary is to trim the front of the lower handgaurd and install a different gastube
This pic is of a "63" I did. For a "65" you will need to shorten the gastube.
A word of caution, the gastubes are hardened. You will need to aneal before flaring the end out round for the gasblock

AW4EVER, both of those look great. I think I will order a couple of extra kits anyway (you can never have too much evil around). I was hoping that the metal hand guards were fairly sturdy, I am thinking it may be a good way to mount a accesory rail. On the 65, is that an original brake, with an extension or something you added, it really looks good.

Do't know why the link takes you to page 4 but, all the pages are there.
The brake is sort of a mix of parts. some made and some bought.

Be VERY CAREFULL about ordering kits. This can happen to YOU

Very good onfo in your link, it is now boomarked. As for ordering kits, I will take my chances, I already have a list of about six shops I can't go into because there are just to many AK's that want to follow me home.
