Solid gas piston, good idea or not? The ones with rings are hard to clean after 100 rounds. Who makes them, are they SS and what do they cost. Sparky1 |
| Solid piston bad idea .You wouldnt use pistons without rings in your car would ya. The U.S. made ones are made out of stainless alloy. Tapco has them as does about everybody else that sells AK parts. They cost aroung $18-$20.As far as cleaning dont get to anal about it after only 100 rds. I usaully just wipe it of with CLP and call it good. |

Clean? AK gas system? huh? Really, you shouldn't clean an AK after 100 rounds. Unless youre shooting corrosive ammo (which I don't think there is any of for AKs), its quite un-necessary wear. Battle rifles (even many ARs) don't need cleaning any more often than every 1000 rounds or so, and even then, its just de-fouling the bbl, and getting rid of carbon build-up is what you really need to take care of. Of course, a decent cleaning and rub-down with CLP is OK if you're not going to shoot the thing for a while (more than a month?). Am I wrong? |
Corrosive ammo for AKs, let's see... there is the yugo stuff (some say it is mildly corrosive), some of the chinese ammo, and I have some czech ammo (headstamp BXN 63) and that is corrosive also. There might be others - but this is what comes to mind. As to unnecessary wear, I try my darndest to clean my AK (along with my other guns) after each range session. If I am shooting non corrosive ammo (which is usually what I shoot) I figure I can put cleaning off for a few days. I prefer to keep my guns clean, maybe it is just me - and maybe it isn't a necessary or mandatory thing to do. But I haven't noticed any extra wear on the parts from me being clean happy. This is just my opinion of course - and I could be wrong, lol. :) |
