I oredered a 7.62x39 saiga yesterday and want to do a convert...

I pretty good idea how to do the pistol grip convert but I am going all out...I want to use a regular ak stock set...

My question is the barrel of proper diameter to just replace the gas block and front site base, or will I have to replace the barrel as well...

Also any tips on drilling notch for the hangaurd retainer???

Thanks in advance..

Not my dept of expertise, but have you seen the Russian section sticky?
My understanding is that you can do the upper handguard with a simple tube replacement which already has the retainer on it. It is the lower that takes extra work.

no need to swap the bbl.

you will have to pull the gas block and front sight base in order to install the lower handguard retainer.

the retainer lock slot can be filed in using a round file, although milling is faster and more accurate.

the radial orientation notch can be dremeled in, but again, a mill is faster, easier and more accurate.

my 16" barrel 7.62 saiga already had the side gooves cut for the lower retainer, so i just have to file the groove that the retainer latch catches on.  i read somewhere that the grooves are only cut on the 16" 7.62 saiga, because they use military production barrels.  all the other calibers and barrel lengths are commercial market only, so they don't have the extra milling done.  i never ended up doing the front hand guard conversion because i decided i really like the saiga forearm.
