I know it is legal to manufacture a firearm for your own personal use, but are there any legal hoops you have to jump through to do so? I am trying to decide between ordering a receiver and building my own from a blank, and i don't want to get into any legal hassles. Bruce |

bruce, the ak is enough of a project, as is, that it makes sense for the first time builder to buy a 100% receiver. priced at $60 or so, they are cheap enough that it is not cost/time effective to build your own...unless you just want a challenge. there are 80% blanks out there, also. if building your own unregistered firearm is your goal, that is a one way out. building the ak, legally, at home is no different than building any other imported sporting rifle. the rifle must have no more than 10 of the main parts (listed by the atf) from imported sources. this merely means that, like a fal or h&k, you must use some usa parts in the construction. there is a wide variety of usa made ak parts, including receivers, to help you build a legal firearm. |

itm builds and ak-74 receiver that is sold thru ohio ordnance works. it is lacking the "x" and "y" reinforcement stamped marks around the pivot pin holes. and there are some minor build issues concerning dimentional correctness...but nothing that can't easily be worked around. globaltrades sell the hungarian f.e.g. ak-74 receiver, also. a better choice all the way around. it is imported, so you need to factor that into your parts count. lastly, hesse (now vulcan) may have their ak-74 rec. on the market. i have built on hesse receivers and have had very little trouble with them despite hesse's reputation. |
