Hello, I have a Bulgarian AK74 parts kit with a front sight assembly that was 'hurt' by UPS. I have a replacement and was wondering how to get the old one off. Getting the two pins out is no problem...but once out this little monster doesn't want to go anywhere. Is it pressed on? How much force should it take to take off and replace? Best Regards, Tom |

TOM, the drilling process for the 2 cross pins often "smooshes" or burrs up bbl. steel into the sightbase and vice versa. these interlocking burrs add removal pressure to the already tight press fit of the journal diameter. i use a hydraulic press to remove and install the bbl. components. block against the rear of your sightbase with 2 blocks of steel. use a piece of brass round stock as a buffer between the bbl. muzzle and the press ram. it usually takes anywhere fromm 500 lbs. and 1000 lbs. of press pressure to start the base moving. once broken free, 200-250 lbs. of pressure will slide it off. once removed, use fine sandpaper to polish up the bbl. journal and remove any burrs prior to installing the new sightbase. |
