Im going to start a build and trying to stay under 300 bucks for a AK-47 build Ill start posting pics and instructions mabey a Video if I can get it on here.. But here is the start of my project.. It starts from a Flat from Ak-builder who I think supplies the best flats and also they work perfectlly with his bender.. ( its not a plug its the truth) and using his tools and also the tools I purchased from Gunbroker amoung others like the Bolt cutter tool and others I have in my inventory...

Rear Trunnion is just installed loose to keep things square for checking purposes only...

Gun kit is comming from Black Market arms and the barrel is a Used Yugo from Centerfire which I will reprofile and then all will be either Parkerized or Gunkote depends if I can learn to Park by the end of he build....I will keep things posted as I progress...

I would say learn to parkerize, it really is very simple.  The only thing you need to do is make sure you keep things clean and sandblast the parts really well.

I guess now  it the time to learn.Ill try it.

Here are some of drilling out the center post and also rear trunnion rivet holes.. and Usually I post pics with the tools needed to do the deed.... if you need a list let me know but a picture is worth more than a post....

Bump I hold the barrel in a vise and then I polish with plumbers emery cloth where the site and the gass block gets seated on the barrel... I take alittle off the barrel as so and then with a sanding drum and a dremel I do the inside diameter of the gas block and the front site... I also have to re-slot the front hand gaurd rertainer and also the back site base... I show those pics tomorrow

Here is the finished barrel its in primer till I sand blast and hopefully learn to parkerize... Ill sandblast this together and so it will fit in a pan parkerize it as is...

Opps Pic is to small... I re do it.... I should have moved the hand gaurd retainer so you can see there is two groves there, the original and the new one I had to make so standard handgaurds fit and  also if you look carefully under the back site base there is another original groove for the retaining pin... another adjustment that has to be made but the front site and gas block pins lined up right I always redrill or just check with the gas block drill bit to make sure the hole and the barrel line up......I have done four barrels like this and only one have I had to slot the gas hole with a drill bit so enough gas gets to the piston for correct cycleing....

you can see it this pic how much the hand gaurd stop and reatiner has to be moved... back and new slot in the barrel....

Here I finished the barrel so I post pics and also started and finished headspace and also started to weld up the rails so Im laying them out on the last pic with an AK Builder rail jig... Just have to insert the right size drill and then spot weld a couple on each side and heat treat after.....you can also see the double slots because of the re-profiling

Nice work! But I have to ask, Cowboys or Broncos? If your as smart with football as you are at building, go with the Cowboys, the Broncos are in the toilet!

Long story but I have a carpet store and I get these rugs since my wife  and my son are Bronco fans I have both Cowboys and Bronco rugs do you think I'm going to ruin one of my Cowboys rugs under that thing.... I actually should take all these equipment to my shop outside but since I had to take care of my wife inside before she passed away I haven't moved or gotten rid of these thing, man they told me off when testing rifles inside.... Just kidding i know i get hate mail if i dont correct that..... Im still in the habit of working inside in the cool air or in the winter warm air..

Welding the rails and after this Ill heat treat the reciever so I know it operates smoothly to this point before doing the real hard work....

Here is the heat treating and drilling out the pin holes for the hammer and trigger also the center support.....

So far I have about 280.00 in this build and I have the stock and handguards that came with this kit... Either Ill refinish them or stain them black.......I dont know which way Im going with that yet...Im trying to make sure I dont go over 350.00

This week Ill get to Headspaceing and setting up two barrels.

The on on the left is my frist AK which was a Screw build and now Im installing rivets so I actually have both in the same phase its easier to build them at the same time.... or build and rebuild.....Triggers are installed and all action is right and also feeds bullets with ease, now on to the barrels....Stocks are not what they are going to be when finished just on there for ease of testing....

[#13]
Here they are with the barrels done on only one I have to install the front site.. Only thing left and then sand blast and parkerize or gunkote... Havent decided yet but I do have both here just havent learned to Park yet.....Opps I need to test shoot atleast three rounds frist before the final finish incase any thing has to be changed I dont effect the finish...

So far Im done untill I refinish the stocks for the Budget Build its total is 325.65 plus 12.86 for the refinish supplies for the wood furniture... the other one is my first rebuild from screws to rivets.... Gunkote finish on both and also I waiting for a flash hider on one.......Ill post better pics when done re-finishing the wood...Im not really into the traditional  battle field look but its much cheeper to build than a tactical look,,,,,

[#15]
here they are after gun kote has been applied and cued for a few days..... Ill take off all the furn and install the final furn on monday since I wont have any of the tac stuff till then and still need another cote of sealer on the wood to dry... Note I installed the flash suppressor on the triditional Ak-47... Will have the stained wood done tommorrow and  post the final pics then Ill take them out to the range and post the target to see no key holeing even though the barrels were used centerline romy barrels.......Total tally on the budget build is 355.56 and on the tac rebuild s 588.22

8/15/2011 5:13:33 PM EDT
[#16]
Finished the Budget build and the total tally was 357.00 also here are the pic of the target to see no key holes and even being used romy barrels from Centerline for 15 bucks each.... lThe Rebuild of the Tactical rifle was not as important to shoot since its the barrel I built it with the frist time and nothing but adding rivets changed...... here are the pics...

Its possible to stay under 4 bills and I wounder if its worth building other than the shear fun of doing it when you can purchase a AK-47 at Big5 and under places for 399.95 to 450.00.... But I know mine are built right and I dont have any doubts when I shoot any of them....

JD-

Great job on this build.  Absolutely fantastic!  Thank you for all your helpful suggestions, comments and offer of guidance.  You really don't know how much that's appreciated sitting over here on the other end of the computer.  You're a stand up guy and I thank you for that.  I'm really glad to be part of this forum.  So many folks willing to offer advice, suggestions and help.  That's virtually unheard of in the "real world."
