I read on this site how one builder recommends heating the rivets prior to crushing them (http://www.akparts.com/akinfo7.html)

Is this a safe method? Of course it will make the metal more malleable and easier to crush, but will the metal lose it's strength and eventually fail due to the heating?

Rivets aren't hardened and not likely will lose much if heated prior to shaping/crushing.  I used to do that but realized that it just made things even more difficult and because of the fact they were so hot and so much had to be done to avoid getting burned they didn't turn out any better than those crushed/shaped without heating.

I thought about trying it. My assumption was the the heated rivet would contract upon cooling theoretically tightening the joint further.
But as mentioned, that add a whole new dimension of fun to the operation when all you really need to do is dimple the appropriate receiver holes.

Hey must be thinking of how they used to heat rivets and crush them for buildings.... I personally wouldnt do it since it hard as hell to rivet them cold much less burn your hands doing this way.... I also dont see how it would help matters.

It would be real hard to heat just the rivet enough to soften it, not heat the trunnions, and have the rivet jig in position to crush the rivet.
You don't want to heat the trunnions any it all.
