There was a thread a while back regarding alternatives to the shepherds hook wire.  Can't seem to find it.  Any suggestions for holding the pivot pins in other than the standard wire?

C clips or E clips i dont remember the size, use 2, doubled up, per axis pin. They can be found at Home Depot, Menards, hardware stores or tractor supply stores usually in the small bolts and screw drawers. Take a axis pin with you for fit.

I brought a pin  with me to Napa and had them find the correct size 'E' clips.

I used to use these, until they fell off while firing and jammed the AK.

Use the wire or plate. BSW

I remember folks saying the e/c clips had a habit of coming off.  Someone suggested hitch pins or something like that.

I am a fan of using the modified shepherd hook that comes with the kits.  I just cut the spring part off and run the straight end under the lower pin and put the hook around the upper pin.

(I probably explained that for shit...)

I have used hitch pin clips before too. Those didn't fall off. Then I got a plate retainer in a trade and swapped the other AK over too. BSW

Is this what you are doing.

If you built your gun from a kit you should have a spring that looks like this.

All you need to do is cut or grind at the arrow, then wrap the hook around the center support. Then install the triger group & axis pin, then drop the spring in the slot of the axis pin. Next install the hammer & hold down on the retainer spring as you push through the axis pin. The retainer spring should drop in the slot of the axis pin if not give it a push. Let off the hammer spring & your FCG is installed. When you are done it should look like this.

I have tried other springs, clips & the retainer plate. This is easy & it stays with the gun no need to take it out again ever.
The real neet thing about this method is you got this spring already, nothing else to buy.
All these plates springs and clips when will it end?

I have used the modified FA spring too with great results, but prefer the retaining plate Tapco makes.  It is simple and very good.  You can find them for something like $5, very affordable.
