An experienced gunsmith is working on one of my rifles and he said: "Also the headspace is a little on the loose side. It's between a no-go and a field gage"

How big / bad of an issue is this?

Once it closes on a field gauge, it's no longer safe to shoot because it may kaboom!
How many rounds do you have through it?

Just guessing off the top of my head, around 300? Give or take...

Really? and it's that loose? Why don't you give a little background on the gun, what caliber, manufacturer, ect.

To put it into perspective, I've got at least 1000 through some of my homebuilds, and they are still so tight that they won't close on a GO gauge without force, but they function flawlessly.

It's a 5.45 Bulgarian built on a milled receiver by ORF (their receiver). The kit was "like new" before it was built.

It has never run right, the rear of the mag was too low and the bolt would slide over the rounds without feeding. That's been fixed now.

If it were mine, I'd tighten up that headspace. But it's a pretty easy thing for me to do. I'm not bragging, I'm just sayin'

It's my opinion that a new rifle should never close on a no go gauge, like I said, my builds barely close on the go gauge, but cycle ammo just fine.

If I were in your shoes, and I absolutely trusted the gunsmith's word, I'd be tempted to take this up with the manufacturer. But I don't know much about that sort of thing - thats why I build my own.

The manufacturer is out of business and was never known for standing behind his work in the first place.

I'll wait to hear back from the guy who has it now. I trust him, I'll see what he says.

can't you order a larger pin and have the headspace redone? I haven't done a complete build on my own yet, but I thought this was the practice....

ETA: glad to hear you decided to fix that rifle! Post a range report when it's all done.
